US Women's National Team Vs. Australia: Victory Tour Hits Los Angeles

The United States women's national team faces Australia as part of their fan tribute tour celebrating the gold medal the team won in London this past Olympiad. The match kicks off at 12:30 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, and will be broadcast live on NBC.

The United States women's national team faces Australia as part of their fan tribute tour celebrating the gold medal the team won in London this past Olympiad. The match kicks off at 12:30 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, and will be broadcast live on NBC.

The US Women defeated 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup champion Japan 2-1 in the gold medal game of the 2012 Summer Olympics on August 9th in front of 80,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium. Since their return to the US, coach Pia Sundhage has announced her plans to return to Sweden as the Swedish Women's Team head coach, today's match and the one on Wednesday will be her final two.

The US women will wear black armbands today, as they honor Betty D'Anjolell who passed away on Tuesday. D'Anjollell was part of a trio of women that helped gain support for women's soccer to be accepted by the USOC for it's 1985 Olympic Sports Festival, and the start of the US Women's National Team that was born on August 17th, 1985.

Five players on today's roster scored in the 2012 London Olympics and eight total players have scored in an Olympics: Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd, Heather O'Reilly, Shannon Boxx, Amy Rodriguez, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Sydney Leroux. Morgan, Rapinoe, and Wambach each had 10 points in this year's Olympics.

The US and Australia face each other for the first time in more than four years. The USA last defeated Australia 2-1 in the opening match of the Peace Queen Cup on June 15, 2008 with Natasha Kai scoring the opening goal and Abby Wambach tallying the game winner in the 77th minute. The USA is unbeaten against Australia with a 19-0-2 record.
