U.S. Open 2012 Results: Andy Murray Defeats Novak Djokovic For 1st Grand Slam Title

It was a long time coming, but Andy Murray finally claimed the first Grand Slam victory of his career with a win in five sets over Novak Djokovic at the 2012 U.S. Open.

The match started in the most dramatic way possible, as Murray and Djokovic's first set was decided after a U.S. Open final record 22-point tiebraker. The set lasted 87 minutes, with 25 minutes alone in the tiebreaker.

Murray continued his momentum, and avoided a tiebreaker in the second set as he went up 2-0 with a 7-5 win. Djokovic went into elimination mode with his back up against the wall, and won the third and fourth sets convincingly, 6-2 and 6-3. Djokovic cleaned up his act after committing 38 unforced errors in the first two sets, as he only slipped up 15 times in the third and fourth sets.

At that point, after four hours of tennis had already commenced, Murray buckled down and took the fifth set to end his Grand Slam drought. He is the first British individual to win a major title since 1936.
