It's been a good day for the top seeds at the 2012 U.S. Open: top-ranked Roger Federer advanced with a win over No. 25 seed Fernando Verdasco, No. 4 seed Andy Murray survived a grueling match with Feliciano Lopez and in the women's singles draw No. 4 seed Serena Williams advanced to Round 4 with a win over Ekaterina Makarova and No. 2 seed Agnieszka Radwanska advanced over Jelena Jankovic.
Radwanksa, Williams and Federer all advanced in straight sets over their opponent, but Murray had to put in a lot of effort to put away Lopez. The match lasted nearly four hours and included three tie-breakers in the final set. Murray won 7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
