The United States was locked in a death grip with China for much of these Olympics games, but it looks like now America has pulled ahead for good for the rest of these games. Thanks to great performances in the team events and at Olympic Stadium in London, the USA is now up ten medals on China.
The US got big performances in plenty of places, and particularly in the team events. The USA women's soccer team and women's water polo team (filled with players who attended either UCLA or USC) both managed to score golds. Lauren Cheney and Sydney Leroux of UCLA and Amy Rodriguez of USC were on the soccer team. The US women's water polo team had similar success in a decisive gold medal victory over Spain, with four UCLA players (including Courtney Matthewson) and three USC players (including Kami Craig) getting Olympic hardware.
Here are the current Olympic medal counts up to this point:
- United States, 90 (39 gold, 25 silver, 26 bronze)
- China, 80 (37, 24, 19)
- Russia, 56 (12, 21, 23)
- Great Britain, 52 (25, 13, 14)
- Germany, 37 (10, 16, 11)
