American Andy Roddick easily advanced in his first-round match on Tuesday, the second day of play at the 2012 U.S. Open in New York.
The No. 20-seeded Roddick defeated fellow American Rhyne Williams in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4. Roddick recorded 20 aces to Williams' seven at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows.
Also on the men's side, No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France brought down Slovakia's Karol Beck in straight sets. No. 6 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic beat Belgium's David Goffin in three sets, as well.
American Sam Querrey, the tournament's 27th seed, needed a bit more work to advance past Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan. He defeated Lu in four sets, recovering after dropping the first set 6-7 (4-7) to win three straight, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.
In the women's deaw, unseeded Venus Williams quickly advanced past fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, posting a 6-3, 6-1 straight-sets win. Day 2 of the 2012 U.S. Open also saw Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, the No. 2 seed, defeat Nina Bratchikova of Russia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
