U.S. Open 2012 Scores: Third-seeded Maria Sharapova Wins Opener

The U.S. Open transitioned into the night-time tennis matches at Flushing Meadows in New York with No. 3 women's seed Maria Sharapova advancing out of her first-round match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Melinda Czink of Hungary.

Los Angeles native Serena Williams, the fourth seed, faces unseeded Coco Vandeweghe Tuesday evening. Beverly Hills resident Mardy Fish was early in his match against Japan's Go Soeda Monday night after Sharapova's win.

Nicole Gibbs, who lives in Santa Monica, faces France's Alize Cornet later on Monday on the women's side, with more players with L.A. area connections playing their first U.S. Open matches. Tuesday.

It's former USC player and Orange, Calif., native Steve Johnson teaming up with Jack Sock, another American, in a doubles match against the top-seeded men's team in the tournament, Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Daniel Nestor of Canada.

Former USC player Maria Sanchez, of Spain, faces Marjana Lucic of Croatia on Tuesday.
