Jake Varner, who was born and currently resides in Bakersfield, California, entered Sunday as one of the favorites to win gold in the men's 96kg freestyle. Varner worked his way through qualifying, the quarterfinals and semifinals in the morning session, setting him up for a chance to win a gold medal.
He went up against Ukrainian Andriitsev Valerii and won, coming up as the victor in rounds one and two. He also scored two technical points to put the match out of reach.
The win added yet another medal to the United States' count, which led in both overall medals and gold medals this summer. It was quite the showing for the Americans in competition these past two weeks, and few were as dominant as Jake Varner was on Sunday.
