The U.S. picked up four more gold medals to keep pace in the precious medals hoarding race with China at 23 overall.
There were a couple of big stories today, none probably larger than Michael Phelps who won the 19th medal of his storied swimming career - setting a new Olympic record as the most decorated Olympian in history. Phelps still has more events to compete in as well.
The women's gymnastic team lived up to their lofty expectations and took home the gold medal, finishing with a final score of 183.596 - a huge five points ahead of Russia. It was their first Olympic title since 1996. The Americans have come into the last two Olympics as world champions only to finish short of the gold medal.
Allison Schmitt also took home a gold medal in the 200-meter free. The U.S. now has nine gold medals, which is still well short of the 13 China has accumulated so far. China's gold total match Japan's overall total, who sit at third place with 13 overall.
