London 2012 Opening Ceremony: Danny Boyle Goes Heavy On The Spectacle

The one thing that you can always say about British director Danny Boyle is that he never does anything halfway. After being put in charge of the opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympics in London, the director made sure that the show would be a memorable occasion. He also made sure it would have plenty of over-the-top and unbelievable moments.

The show began with a celebration of English history which wrapped up with the Olympic Rings suspended above the Olympic Stadium, cascading sparks over the proceedings.

And of course, there were plenty of royal corgis:

As rumored, there was a massive, inflatable Lord Voldemort, which was eventually defeated by Mary Poppins and an army of her doppelgangers.

And a very smug David Beckham made an appearance, much to the delight of Galaxy fans, I'm sure.
