Carlsbad hosted the 2012 Mercury Insurance Open over the past week and it all culminated in Sunday's finals match between the top two seeds in the tournament. The WTA tune-up event for the U.S. Open featured plenty of exciting play, including a breakout performance by qualifier Yung-Jan Chan, who made it all the way to the semifinals.
No. 1 seed Marion Bartoli took on No. 2 seed Dominika Cibulkova on Sunday afternoon for the title. In a bit of a surprise, Cibulkova was able to topple Bartoli in straight sets, by a final score of 6-1, 7-5. Cibulkova needed just 34 minutes to take the first set, breaking serve three times and winning six straight games after Bartoli confidently held serve to open things up.
Bartoli jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set before Cibulkova came roaring back to claim the trophy. Cibulkova now leads Bartoli 3-2 all-time in matches between the two women.
