2012 Long Beach Grand Prix: Josef Newgarden Out After One Turn

Ideally a racer would like to stay in a race longer than a few seconds, but that’s exactly what’s happened to Josef Newgarden at the 2012 Long Beach Grand Prix. The first turn on the track is known for having pass potential, and the rookie who started in the second spot on the grid went to take first from Dario Franchitti. He didn’t quite make it, and was pinned up against the wall.

There were no penalties assessed, and the plan almost worked so no one is really at fault. Just one of the accidents that will happen on the track. The race went into a four lap caution to get Newgarden off.

2011 Road to Indy Champion, this is Newgarden’s first time competing at the IndyCar level but not his first time going around the Long Beach temporary course. He had five wins and ten podium finishes last year on the Firestone Indy Lights series.
