The 2012 West Coast Conference Basketball Championships will begin on Wednesday in Las Vegas, as the eight-game tournament will be played at the Orleans Arena. The Pepperdine Waves (10-18, 4-12 in WCC play) have been at the bottom of the conference for most of the season, but won their last two games to avoid playing the play-in game on Wednesday, February 28.
The Waves are locked in as the No. 7 seed, and will play the San Diego Toreros on Thursday, the second of two quarterfinal matchups which begin at 6 p.m. PST. San Diego (12-17, 7-9) lost Saturday night at home to Gonzaga, locking them in as the No. 6 seed. The winner will face the No. 3 seed BYU Cougars on Friday, March 2 at 8 p.m. PST in a tournament quarterfinal game televised by ESPNU.
Pepperdine lost both games to the Toreros this season, falling 65-56 in San Diego on January 26, then losing at home 70-57 on February 9. The Waves lost to BYU twice as well, 77-64 at home on January 21 and 86-48 in Provo on February 11.
