Matt Barkley status uncertain for Sun Bowl, but Max Wittek is ready for USC

The Trojans senior quarterback is trying to get healthy for the Trojans first bowl game since 2009.

Thanks to an injured shoulder he sustained against the crosstown-rival UCLA Bruins in November, USC Trojans senior quarterback Matt Barkley's status for the Sun Bowl is still unknown. If Barkley isn't available for the Trojans in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31, the starting job will fall to freshman quarterback Max Wittek who notched his first start against the No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the end of last month. Wittek is preparing as he normally does for the Sun Bowl despite the unknown status of the starting quarterback.

Wittek went 14-for-23 with 186 yards of passing with a touchdown and an interception against the Fighting Irish. The Trojans struggled at the end of the year, losing four of their last five games with three of the losses coming against top-25 teams. The Trojans will be making their third appearance in the Sun Bowl when they face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Trojans have lost both of their previous appearances in the game.
