USC football recruiting: 4-star safety Max Redfield decommits from Trojans

Notre Dame could now be the frontrunner for the stand out from Mission Viejo.

To call the No. 19 USC Trojans' weekend a bad one would be an understatement. After losing a shootout at home with the No. 3 Oregon Ducks, they found out they may lose one of their best commits.

Redfield visited the Notre Dame Fighting Irish a few weeks ago and reportedly came home blown away by the experience. Redfield posted on his Facebook page about his decision to retract his commitment from USC.

Going back on my word is something I never imagined doing and it hurts me to do it but in the end I feel is necessary to do in order to decide what college I want to go to and in the end what path I want to take in life. For many different reasons I am choosing to decommit from USC and re-open recruiting. I am sorry to the people I might let down or hurt in this decision but it is a decision that is crucial for my future athletically, academically, and spiritually.

Redfield is ranked by ESPN as the 37th-best player in the country and the second-best athlete. He has an official visit scheduled for Nov. 9 with the Washington Huskies. He's also expected to schedule an official visit with Oregon in the near future. While the Trojans still have one of the best recruiting classes in the country, the departure of Redfield, potentially to a big rival in Notre Dame, could be a big blow. Redfield didn't completely close the door on USC though, saying they still remain an option.
