Fort Larned captured the 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic, holding the lead from gate to finish and winning the $5 million prize in front of 55,123 fans at Santa Anita Park. Mucho Macho Man came on late to challenge Fort Larned, but the four-year-old colt held off the challenger in a thrilling finish to win the richest horse race in North America.

The win pushed Fort Larned's record to 8-2-1 from 19 career starts. He ran the 1¼ miles in 2:00.11, a quick time on the fast track.

The biggest surprise of the day was probably that Game On Dude, the Bob Baffert trained horse, couldn't mount a better challenge considering that Santa Anita is his home track and he is 5-for-5 at the track.

Earlier in the day, Wise Dan won the Mile, Trinniberg won the Sprint and Little Mike took the Turf. Shanghai Bobby was the winner in the Juvenile, making Rosie Napravnik the second woman jockey to win a Breeders' Cup flat race.
