After blowing 22 saves last season, the Los Angeles Angels needed a bullpen upgrade this offseason and while they added a key piece in Ryan Madson, their bullpen may need more work before the start of the season.
SB Nation's Angels blog, Halos Heaven, broke down the current depth chart with Madson now penciled into the closers role.
Behind Madson, Ernesto Frieri and Scott Downs are slotted for late game innings while Kevin Jepsen, Jordan Walden, Nick Maronde and Bobby Cassevah fill out the rest of the depth chart. There are also a few candidates on the bubble, including Ryan Brasier, Steve Geltz, Brandon Sisk, Michael Kohn and Andrew Taylor.
Combined, the Angels have plenty of bullpen arms to fill out a depth chart, but the question will be at the back end. Madson is coming off serious injury and relying on him could end up being a recipe for disaster. Then again, the Rangers signed Joe Nathan coming off an injury last season and he turned out to be a big reason why Texas made the playoffs over the Angels.
