The USC Trojans shook off an embarrassing loss to Illinois by taking down the Texas Longhorns on Tuesday night at the Maui Invitational. USC now will face Marquette in the fifth-place game on Tuesday.
The Trojans needed overtime to beat the Longhorns, 59-53. Eric Wise led USC with 13 points and eight rebounds. Jio Fontan added 11 points and six assists.
The tournament championship will feature a surprise matchup as Butler takes on Illinois. The Bulldogs stunned ninth-ranked North Carolina in the semifinals, while Illinois was able to handle tournament host Chaminade.
Butler raced out to a 17-point halftime lead on UNC with stifling defense. The Bulldogs were able to hold off a late North Carolina charge, and advanced with an 82-71 win.
Illinois built a double-digit lead early over Chaminade and was never really challenged in an easy, 84-61, victory.
The Tar Heels will face Chaminade in the third-place game. Texas will take on Mississippi State as both teams try to avoid a winless trip. Mississippi State was blown out for the second-straight game by Marquette.
