2012 Australian Open First Round Results: Mardy Fish Beats Gilles Muller In Straight Sets

Beverly Hills resident Mardy Fish is the top-ranked U.S. player in the men's singles competition at the 2012 Australian Open.

The 2012 Australian Open is already underway and several first round matches have been completed. Southern California has a representative who has won his opening match and will be advancing to the second round.

Beverly Hills resident Mardy Fish defeated Luxembourg's Gilles Muller on Monday in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Fish is the No. 8 seed, the highest-seeded U.S. competitor in the men's singles competition.

Fish's second-round match will pit him against Alejandro Falla of Colombia. Falla defeated Italtian player Fabio Fognini in the first round by scores of 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

Other notables who advances in play on Monday include No. 7 Tomas Berdych, No. 10 Nicolas Almagro, No. 18 Feliciano Lopez, No. 30 Kevin Anderson, Ivo Karlovic and Flavio Cipolla.
