The Portland Timbers made a late change to their starting lineup, scratching Eddie Johnson and giving Kenny Cooper the start at forward for the first time since July 26th. The USMNT member only has three goals since joining the Timbers. Cooper had been playing for 1860 Munich, and due to MLS roster rules, had to go to the team at the top of the waiver list as a returning National team player. The expansion Timbers were quick to bring him on.
However, despite his pedigree, Cooper was benched for English footballer Eddie Johnson when he didn’t produce goals. Johnson has just one goal in six appearances, but was scheduled to start before it was reported he was being held out with a concussion. It’s unclear when Johnson suffered the concussion, and why he was in the originally reported starting XI.
