Padres Have Combined No-Hitter Through Eight Innings Against Dodgers

Hits are at a premium in Los Angeles today, as through eight innings at Dodger Stadium the Dodgers and Padres have combined for just a single base hit. The Padres, who are in their 43rd year of existence and have never had a no-hitter, got six no-hit innings out of Aaron Harang in his first start off the disabled list. Josh Spence, Chad Qualls, and Mike Adams combined to pitch the seventh and eighth innings.

Harang threw 37 pitches in the first inning, and it looked his day might be a short one, but escaped after two walks with no damage. He needed just 58 pitches to complete his final five innings. Rubby De La Rosa wasn't too shabby himself. He didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, and struck out eight in his six scoreless innings. The Dodgers have pitched 26 consecutive scoreless innings themselves.

The record for fewest combined hits in a game is one, set at Dodger Stadium on September 9, 1965, when Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game as the Dodgers beat the Cubs and Bob Hendley, who allowed only one hit himself.
