US Socer Faces Costa Rica In September

The US Men’s National soccer team will host Costa Rica September 2nd at the Home Depot Center in Carson at 8pm pst. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN2. This will be the first encounter between these two teams since October 2009, when a Jonathan Bornstein goal in the fifth minute of second half stoppage time gave the US a 2-2 draw in the final match of 2010 World Cup qualifying. This gave the US first place in the group, and forced Costa Rica into a qualification playoff series which they lost to Uruguay.

The US and Costa Rica have a long history, with an even 11-11-6 (international, W-L-D) record between them. This will be the first friendly match between the teams since 1995, as the teams usually meet in tournament competition. That 1995 match was a 2-1 victory for the Ticos in Miami, Fl.

This Friday night match occurs between two road matches for the LA Galaxy. The September date also means play will have started in the European leagues, however the match falls during a official FIFA international weekend. MLS has traditionally not stopped play for international weekends, though players have been let go to play for national teams.
