First Place Angels Open Three-Game Series With Tigers In Anaheim

The Angels have won six straight series to move back into a first place tie in the American League West. Monday night they open up a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers. Detroit is a half-game behind the Indians for first place in the American League Central. Joel Pineiro gets the start for the Angels, with Charlie Furbush getting the nod for Detroit.

Howie Kendrick had four hits in 10 at-bats in three games against the Dodgers this weekend, and was named to his first All-Star team on Sunday, joining teammate Jered Weaver on the American League squad. Kendrick has a 12-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .340/.380/.468. On the season, Kendrick is hitting .308/.365/.475 and has played second base, left field, and first base.

The Tigers had four players named to the AL All-Star team. Alex Avila was the surprise as he was voted to start at catcher, and he will be joined by first baseman Miguel Cabrera, starting pitcher extraordinaire Justin Verlander, and closer Jose Valvderde. The Tigers are coming off a 10-game homestand, during which they went 5-5. This is the first meeting of the two clubs this season.
