The depleted Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday afternoon, after sending two more players to the disabled list. Shortstop Rafael Furcal, who hurt his left side on Friday night, was placed on the DL, as was starting pitcher Jon Garland, with right shoulder inflammation. Luckily for the Dodgers though, they have Clayton Kershaw on the mound today.
Kershaw threw a complete game shutout in his last outing, and has given up a total of eight runs in his last six starts. He has a scoreless inning streak of 12 innings, dating back to May 23. Johnny Cueto gets the start for the Reds. Cueto, who began the season on the disabled list, and in five starts is 2-2 with a 2.20 ERA this season.
To replace Furcal and Garland, the Dodgers recalled Ivan DeJesus and John Ely from Triple A. Ely is expected to pitch out of the bullpen, likely until relief pitcher Blake Hawksworth is ready to be activated, and Rubby De La Rosa will start on Tuesday in place of Garland. The Dodgers have had 13 different players make 18 trips to the disabled list this season. Garland and Furcal are two of five Dodgers to be on the DL twice this year.
