The Los Angeles Galaxy earned an automatic bid in the 2011-2012 CONCACAF Champions League by virtue of winning the supporters shield last year. They, along with MLS Cup winner Colorado Rapids, earned a spot in the group stages. Today the Galaxy learned that they are in Group A, along with LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica, and two more members that will be decided in the play in stage.
↵There are a number of teams still competing for those last two spots. Monarcas Morelia or Pumas UNAM of Mexico will have one of the play in spots and will face the runner-up to the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship. Club Motagua of Honduras will face CSD Municipal of Guatemala.
↵Competition begins in July with the preliminary round. Group stages are set to begin in August and will not finish until October. Alajuelense is the 26 time winner of Costa Rica’s Primera Division. They received their automatic berth by winning the league’s 2011 Clausura season.
