Real Salt Lake Host LA Galaxy: David Beckham Named Captain

For the first time in two years, David Beckham will don the Captain's armband in the Los Angeles Galaxy's upcoming match against Real Salt Lake in Utah. Landon Donovan, who has worn the armband since Bruce Arena took over the team in 2009, will be joining the United States Men's National Team as they go up against Argentina this weekend. David Beckham had previously been offered the Captain's band by Landon Donovan, back in July of 2007, Beckham's first year with the team.

"Bruce has asked me to wear it, and I'll be proud to wear it," Beckham said. "It doesn't change the way I play. It's something you're very proud to wear, but you need more that that one leader on the field."

Beckham came to Los Angeles with six years of Captaining the English National Team on his Ciriculum Vitae, from 2000 to 2006. The match Saturday will be David's first at Rio Tinto Stadium, his first four passes being missed either due to other commitments or injury. He's only gone up against Real Salt Lake three times in his last nine possible meetings. RSL are unbeaten in their last 35 competitions at Rio Tinto.
