The Santa Clara Broncos aren't really supposed to contend for the WCC title, but they sure did give an inspired performance on Thanksgiving night at the 76 Classic in Anaheim. Santa Clara took an early 41-32 lead over the New Mexico Lobos, had to deal with a rally that ended up forcing overtime, but eventually triumphed in the extra session.
New Mexico took advantage of 33 trips to the free throw line, nailing 31 of their attempts, which atoned for 36% shooting from the field. But Santa Clara was the one nailing the threes, hitting eleven on the game to help score the big upset in Anaheim. Kevin Foster scored 26 points and Evan Roquemore 24 to lead SCU basketball to victory. It was a big-time win for a team that is going under the radar and still will probably need more excellent performances like tonight's to make a dent in conference play.
Santa Clara will face the Oklahoma-Washington State winner.
