Matt Barkley For Heisman: USC Trojans Begin Campaign For Quarterback

You have to give USC credit. They feel like their quarterback should be the frontrunner for the Heisman trophy and if you don't believe them, they are providing you with the information in order to change your mind. Just watch this video.

USC felt it necessary to put together their own clip of what makes Matt Barkley this year's Heisman trophy winner to this point in the season. And honestly, they have plenty of reason to feel this way. First, Barkley can thank his defense for effectively removing Oregon running back LaMichael James from contention. Second, James' drop also hinders Alabama running back Trent Richardson's candidacy since James' numbers are better across the board. And third, well, Barkley's numbers are pretty crazy.

Barkely has amassed 3,105 passing yards with 33 touchdowns against only seven interceptions. Those are definitely Heisman worthy. He's also a semifinalist for the Maxwell, Walter Camp and Davey O'Brien awards.

Only person who could possibly stand in Barkley's way right now is another man who led his team to a huge upset on Saturday: Baylor's Robert Griffin III.

↵

Griffin has amassed 3,572 passing yards with 33 touchdowns, five interceptions plus five rushing touchdowns. Both Barkley and Griffin have one blemish on their record (Barkley's performance against Arizona State, Griffin's against Oklahoma State) so they are even there. It may come down to team record where Barkley has the edge (USC is 9-2, Baylor is 7-3).

USC is behind Barkley's candidacy. Even other coaches have spoken up. Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian said, "If I'm an NFL head coach, I'd pick Matt Barkley ahead of Andrew Luck." Oregon head coach Chip Kelly said, "He was the best quarterback we faced this year."

2011 Heisman trophy winner, Matt Barkley? Could happen. And USC is doing everything they can to make sure that happens.
