Stanford Outclasses UCLA 35-0

Pasadena, CA (Sports Network) - Andrew Luck tossed two touchdowns as 25th- ranked Stanford dominated UCLA, 35-0, in the Pac-10 opener for both schools at the Rose Bowl.

Luck went 11-for-24 with 151 yards while Owen Marecic added a score on the ground for the Cardinal (2-0, 1-0 Pac-10), who got into the national rankings this week with a 52-17 victory over Sacramento State last weekend. Stepfan Taylor had 20 carries for 81 yards while Ryan Whalen and Coby Fleener each caught a scoring pass.

Kevin Prince went just 6-for-12 for 39 yards while Jonathan Franklin had 11 carries for 73 yards for the Bruins (0-2, 0-1), who opened their season last weekend with a 31-22 loss to Kansas State.

A scary moment happened early in the third quarter when UCLA junior running back Derrick Coleman was taken off the field on a stretcher after being knocked unconscious on a running play.

He regained consciousness and had movement in his extremities, but was eventually removed from the field with a brace around his neck and was taken to a hospital.

After an exchange of possessions to start the game, Stanford took the lead with a seven-play drive that covered 61 yards and was capped on a 16-yard touchdown catch by Whalen from Luck for a 7-0 lead with 9:31 left in the first.

UCLA was again held to a three-and-out on its next touch and had to punt the ball away.

The Cardinal took the ball 81 yards over the next 14 plays that ate over six minutes off the clock, but the drive stalled at the five-yard line and a 23- yard field goal from Nate Whitaker gave the visitors a 10-0 lead with 1:33 left in the first.

In the second, Randall Carroll fumbled the ball near midfield and Stanford's Chase Thomas recovered. Seven plays later Stanford cashed the turnover into points as Whitaker booted a 21-yarder for a 13-0 advantage with 6:49 to play in the first half.

UCLA started the second half with the ball and went on a 12-play drive that covered 57 yards, but came away empty as Kai Forbath's 49-yard field goal attempt went wide right.

Stanford then responded with a long drive of its own, taking the ball 68 yards on 18 plays that gobbled up almost 9 1/2 minutes of the clock. Facing a 3rd- and-goal, Luck took the ball himself, lowered his helmet and appeared to make it into the end zone from five yards out, but a replay showed that his knee touched the ground at the one. Marecic took the ball in on fourth down and Luck hit Doug Baldwin for the two-point conversion and a 21-0 lead with 43 seconds to play in the third.

On the next play from scrimmage, Michael Thomas stripped Prince of the ball and took it 21 yards into the end zone for a 28-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Luck's three-yard toss to Fleener with 8:38 left to play capped an eight-play, 51-yard drive to give the Cardinal a 35-0 lead.

UCLA owns a 45-33-3 edge in the series with Stanford, but the Cardinal have taken the last two games on the heels of a five-game slide...Stanford hosts Wake Forest next Saturday while UCLA hosts Houston...Stanford controlled the ball for almost 37 minutes.
