Angels And United Way Teaming Up To Help At-Risk Youth

The Angels are one of 15 MLB teams competing in an online vote for the “Pepsi Refresh Project,” a competition with a reward of a $200,000 grant to help fund charitable activities.

Fans can vote online now for the Angels project, dubbed “Destination Graduation,” which aims to eradicate the 10% high school dropout rate among at-risk youth in Orange County.

“People are often amazed to learn that, in an affluent place like Orange County , thousands of bright, terrific, ambitious kids drop out of school because of circumstances they can’t control,” said Torii Hunter, the Angels’ center fielder and team Ambassador. “It’s heartbreaking because, like the rest of us, they deserve every chance possible to fulfill their dreams. Making sure they have that chance is the reason United Way created Destination Graduation.”

Added Maria Chavez Wilcox, president and CEO of Orange County United Way: “Helping our county’s at-risk youth has never been more important or easier. All you have to do is go online and click. And click again. And click again until you’ve reached the 25-vote limit for each day. Every vote is an important vote for our community, and a compassionate show of support for children who need a helping hand.”

Online voting runs through next Tuesday, August 17.
