Carroll Leads Dodgers To Win Over Nationals

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Jamey Carroll went 3-for-3, knocked in two runs and scored twice to lead the Dodgers in an 8-3 victory and series win over Washington to cap a three-game set from Chavez Ravine.

Ted Lilly (5-8) won his second straight start in Dodger Blue, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out six and walking none in six innings. The newly-acquired lefty bested the NL West front-running Padres last Tuesday in a 2-1 final.

James Loney, A.J. Ellis and Jay Gibbons, in his first big league appearance since 2007, each contributed a run driven in to the win, Los Angeles’ fourth in six games since losing six straight. Reed Johnson provided a late two-run, pinch-hit single.

Washington’s Jason Marquis (0-4), back after a 3 1/2-month stay on the disabled list because of elbow surgery, lasted into the fifth inning and was charged with five hits and five runs, only two of those earned.

Mike Morse and Justin Maxwell hit solo home runs as Washington lost its third game in four tries.

The Dodgers jumped on Marquis for four runs in the first and never looked back. A bit of small ball generated a big inning, as Scott Podsednik walked and stole second. Ryan Theriot reached on a sacrifice bunt courtesy of a Marquis error, then swiped second. The throw from Wil Nieves behind the plate sailed past second and scored the lead runner.

Andre Ethier kept things moving with a walk and Loney ripped a single to left for a 2-0 game. Carroll later sent a base hit back through the middle to plate two more for a four-run lead.

Morse and Maxwell went back-to-back against Lilly with one out in the second, but consecutive doubles from Carroll and Ellis in the fourth put the Dodger lead at three.

Nieves doubled leading off the fifth, was sacrificed to third by Marquis and scored on an Alberto Gonzalez sacrifice fly. That would be all for Washington, though, and LA got a pair of clutch pinch hits — a two-out RBI single from Gibbons in the sixth and Johnson’s two-run base knock in the eighth — to polish off the win.
