USC vs. Arizona State final: Trojans win 38-17

The USC Trojans handed the Arizona State Sun Devils their fourth consecutive loss with a 38-17 win Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles. ASU held the lead as late as midway through the third quarter, but the Trojans' defense clamped down as the offense kicked into gear to pull out in front.

Matt Barkley threw three interceptions in the first three quarters, one of which was taken back for a touchdown by Alden Darby to give ASU a 14-7 lead in the second quarter.

USC's ability to come back after mistakes was the story of the day. The Trojans turned the ball over three times in total, including a fumble by Marqise Lee to start the game and set up the Sun Devils' first touchdown.

After ASU took the lead in the third quarter, 17-14, following Barkley's third interception, the Trojans began to take over. Two consecutive drives ended in scores from running back Curtis McNeal, and USC took a comfortable 28-17 lead to the fourth.

Arizona State couldn't do much on offense to close the game, and USC snapped its two-game losing streak to keep hopes of a Rose Bowl trip alive.

Box Score Hero: McNeal took the throne from Lee by rushing for 163 yards and two scores. He also added a 22-yard touchdown catch.

Rankings Ramifications: No. 19 USC would have surely fallen out of the rankings with a loss, but they now have a chance to move up with a win.

But Did They Cover? USC's dominant second half allowed them to cover, as they were favored by 10.5.

Next Week's Schedule: USC visits rival UCLA with a trip to the Pac-12 Championship game on the line. ASU will look to end its losing streak against Washington State.

Trojans take control in 3rd, lead 28-17 over ASU

The USC Trojans continue to shoot themselves in the foot, but they have still managed to lead 28-17 over the Arizona State Sun Devils after three quarters of play on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles. Matt Barkley has thrown three interceptions, and Marqise Lee has fumbled, but the USC defense has played well to give the Trojans an opportunity.

All 17 ASU points have come off USC turnovers. The most recent was a spectacular play by the Sun Devils' Carl Bradford, in which he batted the ball at the line of scrimmage, then dove to catch the ball himself. Arizona State would drive down the field on the ensuing possession before stalling near the goal line and settling for a field goal to go up 17-14.

It wouldn't take long for the Trojans to respond, as they drove down the field on their next possession for the go-ahead score. Curtis McNeal capped off a 9-play, 59-yard march with a 5-yard touchdown run.

Two fourth down plays may prove to be decisive. The first was a 4th and 1 for ASU near midfield. The Trojans were able to sack Taylor Kelly and get the ball back in good field position for the offense. USC faced a 4th and 1 near the 20 just minutes later, and converted to extend the drive.

McNeal recorded his second touchdown of the quarter to extend the Trojans' lead to double-digits, this time on a 22-yard screen pass.

USC overcomes mistakes to tie ASU, 14-14, at half

The USC Trojans have overcome a number of mistakes to pull even with the Arizona State Sun Devils, 14-14, at halftime on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles. USC has turned the ball over three times, including an interception for a touchdown, but managed to get enough big plays to stay with ASU through two quarters.

After the Trojan defense came up with an interception to start the second quarter, ASU's Alden Darby intercepted Matt Barkley and took the ball 70 yards to put the Sun Devils up 14-7.

The Trojans would wait until their final drive of the half to answer back. Barkley led a 13-play, 79-yard drive that took almost six minutes and was extended by several completions to Marqise Lee. Barkley hit Xavier Grimble from 4 yards out to complete the drive and give USC the tying score.

Lee is already having a big day, with seven catches for 136 yards and a touchdown.

USC will receive the ball to start the second half.

Trojans tied, 7-7, with Sun Devils after wild 1st

The USC Trojans are knotted with the Arizona State Sun Devils, 7-7, after one quarter of play on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles. A crucial mistake hurt the Trojans early, and allowed the Sun Devils prime position to get on the board first.

Star wide receiver Marqise Lee fumbled the ball on USC's first play from scrimmage to set Arizona State up on the Trojans' 38. Five plays later, Taylor Kelly hit Chris Coyle for the touchdown to put the Trojans in a 7-point hole.

Lee would make up for his mistake as Matt Barkley hit him for an 80-yard touchdown to start a wild sequence of plays at the end of the quarter. The ensuing kickoff was fumbled by ASU, giving the ball back to USC deep in Sun Devils territory.

On the next play, Barkley was intercepted by Chris Young at the 2-yard line. ASU has the ball as the second quarter begins.
