USC vs. Colorado Preview: Matt Barkley primed for breakout game

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

Matt Barkley could be in for a big day against Colorado's struggling defense.

Expectations can be a tough thing to handle over the course of a long football season. The USC Trojans began the year looking like an offensive juggernaut with Matt Barkley, Silas Redd, Marqise Lee and Robert Woods all set to make plays down the field.

Through six games, some believe we are yet to see the best of this USC offense. The team is averaging a little more than 32 points per game, although in Pac-12 play the average is down to about 26 points. Despite their shortcomings early in the year, this Saturday's game with the struggling Colorado Buffaloes could be just the game for Barkley and crew to finally breakout.

Here is SB Nation's USC blog, Conquest Chronicles, with their take on the offense:

The point is this game has to be a blowout to relieve any concern about the Trojans. And as such, the Buffaloes secondary will not be able to contain Robert Woods and Marqise Lee. Remember, Matt Barkley broke the school record for touchdowns in a game against the Buffs in Boulder, Colo. last year. The passing game FINALLY (knock on wood) does its thing.

The Buffaloes are 1-5 this season and are giving up an average of nearly six touchdowns per game. There are few guarantees in today's college football world, but the Trojans failing to put anything less than a bunch of points on the scoreboard this evening would be a big surprise.
