USC pulls away for 38-28 win

The Trojans offense got rolling after a shaky start to dispatch of the Utes behind an offensive explosion by two of their stars, Matt Barkley and Marqise Lee.

Trojans clinging to lead over Utes

The USC Trojans continue to lead the Utah Utes 24-21 after a missed opportunity to score in the third quarter.

After battling back from 14-10 down in the second quarter, USC forced Utah to punt and looked poised to score when Matt Barkley completed five straight passes that led to put the Trojans on the Utes 11 yard line. Then Silas Redd rushed for a loss of two, then the Trojans got flagged for holding, which led to Andre Heidari missing a 40 yard field goal attempt.

After once again forcing the Utes to punt, the Trojans were marching down the field again before the quarter clock struck zero. Matt Barkley finished the quarter up to 215 yards and two touchdowns. Marqise Lee has nine catches for 104 yards, Robert Woods with 69 yards on six receptions. Silas Redd leads the Trojans on the ground with 77 yards and one touchdown.

Matt Barkley rallies USC to 24-21 halftime lead

The offense has picked up in the second quarter between the USC Trojans and the Utah Utes, and USC has recovered with 17 second quarter points to take a 24-21 lead at halftime.

After USC cut the lead to 14-10, Utah marched back down the field thanks to some big connections between Jon Hays and his wide receivers. Hays found Kenneth Scott again for 12 yards, then connected with DeVonte Christopher for 27 yards and an 18-yard touchdown to give the Utes an 11-point lead.

Back came USC, as Matt Barkley found Robert Woods for 41 yards. Woods had just recovered from this hit.

Woods has looked fine since returning to the field though.

Then Barkley found Randall Telfer for a 23-yard touchdown pass, where Telfer pulled a Dominique Byrd with a one-handed grab.

After Utah fumbled the ball on its next offensive possession, Silas Redd set up a Barkley-to-Woods connection for a go-ahead score.

Utah recovered with a nice long drive to end the first half, but had a touchdown called back for an ineligible man downfield, and the Utah field goal was blocked.

Khaled Holmes bad snaps lead to 14-7 Utah score

The USC Trojans couldn't have gotten off to a worse start against the Utah Utes. On the very first play of the game, USC center Khaled Holmes had a terrible shotgun snap that Matt Barkley had trouble tracking down, and Utah Utes defender Nate Fakahafua tracked it down, tore it out of Barkley's hands, and raced 8 yards to make it 7-0 Utah.

Yeah, that sounds pretty exciting. Check it out.

It didn't get much better on the next drive. A second botched snap by Holmes led to a Utah fumble recovery. The Utes then struck immediately with a Jon Hays fade to Kenneth Scott for an 1- yard touchdown to make it 14-0 Utah.

The Trojans finally got back on the board with a big drive. Barkley had three big connections with Marqise Lee, and Silas Redd eventually punched it in to cut the lead to 14-7. The Trojans drove into Utah territory early in the second quarter and notched an Andre Heidari field goal to cut the lead to 14-10.
