After a pair of close contests, the USC Trojans went to an aerial assault to blowout the Syracuse Orange 38-17 on Saturday night at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Matt Barkley threw for a season-high 324 yards and a career-high tying five touchdowns.
The five touchdowns for Barkley were thrown to five different receivers. Freshman tight end Xavier Grimble caught a touchdown for the second straight game, while fellow freshmen Marqise Lee and Randall Telfer caught their first career scores. Barkley completed 26 of 39 passes on the night.
After a pair of 100-yard games receiving, Robert Woods settled for only 82 yards on eight catches, including his fourth touchdown catch of the year. Woods has 361 yards receiving on 33 catches through three games this season.
Barkley surpassed 300 yards for the second time this season and the sixth time in his career. Barkley passed John David Booty for fifth place on the all-time USC passing yardage list. Booty threw for 6,125 yards at USC, while Barkley is at 6,418 yards and counting after Saturday night's contest.
USC (3-0, 1-0 in the Pac-12) travels to Tempe next Saturday to battle the Arizona State Sun Devils (2-1).

The USC Trojans have had aerial success on Saturday evening in Los Angeles, as Matt Barkley has thrown for three touchdowns and 222 yards just three minutes into the third quarter, as the Trojans lead the Syracuse Orange 24-3 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Barkley threw his third touchdown pass, a 44-yard strike to freshman tight end Randall Telfer with 12:58 remaining in the third quarter.
USC trailed for the first time this season with 8:16 remaining in the first quarter after a 23-yard by Ross Krautman put Syracuse up 3-0. But the Trojans marched 66 yards in 10 plays, culminating in a five-yard touchdown pass from Barkley to Rhett Ellison.The Barkley-to-Ellison connection was key as the two were out of sync last Saturday against the Utah Utes, resulting in a few broken plays and one interception.
The Trojans have allowed just 13 points in the first half in three games so far this season.
