The UCLA Bruins went to Berkeley and lost to Cal, a tradition dating back to 1998. But history is a tricky thing in college football, and there's good reason to look at Saturday's loss as something other than a complete catastrophe.

It was a quarter of turnovers and missed opportunities for the UCLA Bruins, who enter the half trailing the California Golden Bears 16-7.
UCLA started the quarter with a solid drive that took them inside California’s 30-yard line. Unfortunately for the Bruins, they fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Golden Bears.
Cal capitalized on the turnover, driving 67 yards on eight plays for a touchdown. Golden Bears’ quarterback Zach Maynard threw a five-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Anderson for the score.
UCLA answered with a long drive of their own. Most of the work came on the ground, as running back Johnathan Franklin ran for 22 yards, while quarterback Brett Hundley added 20 more. However, Bruins kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 46-yard field goal that would have tied things up.
After being stopped for a three-and-out, California recovered a fumbled Bruins punt and marched 34 yards on five plays for their second touchdown of the quarter.
The Bruins threatened to cut into the lead prior to the half, but Hundley threw an interception that ended the drive.

The UCLA Bruins took advantage of a short field early and have a 7-3 lead over the Cal Golden Bears after the first quarter in Berkeley.
Cal's first possession ended on the fourth play of the game when Zach Maynard was intercepted by Andrew Abbott, giving UCLA a 28-yard field. Taking a full seven plays to go 28 yards, the Bruins scored when Brett Hundley hit Cassius Marsh -- a defensive end playing tight end -- for a four-yard touchdown pass.
Maynard led Cal on a long 15-play drive on its next possession. The lefty completed seven passes on the drive to get the Golden Bears inside the UCLA ten-yard line, but was sacked on third down. Vincenzo D'Amato put through a 26-yard field goal for the 7-3 score.
Maynard's interception is the only turnover of the game. Cal has outgained UCLA 90-62 through one frame, but Hundley has been an accurate 7-9 for 40 yards and the score.
