UCLA vs. Oregon State: First Quarter Recap, Brehaut Throws Bruins To 7-3 Lead

The UCLA Bruins received the ball at the start of this game against the Oregon State Beavers but were unable to move the ball too far before they were forced to punt.

The Beavers came onto the field, starting at their own 10-yard line. Redshirt freshman quarterback Sean Mannion led an efficient drive, completing 5 of 8 passes for 75 yards, including a 31-yard pass to senior James Rodgers, who is playing his first game since October 2010 after having two knee surgeries.

In total, the Oregon State drive was 17 plays long, went 82 yards and lasted 7:46. They had to settle for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

That, however, was short lived, as UCLA quarterback Richard Brehaut  led a 3 play, 80 yard drive that lasted only 1:16. First down, Brehaut connected with Josh Smith on a 62-yard bomb before he was pushed out at the OSU 18-yard line.

After getting sacked, Brehaut then threw a rocket to Taylor Embree, who held onto the pass for a touchdown despite getting thrown around on the reception.

With a 7-3 lead, the Bruins kicked the ball back to the Beavers, who returned the ball to the 30-yard line. At the end of the first quarter, UCLA has a 4 point advantage, and Oregon State has the ball at their own 45.
