Isaiah Thomas of Washington hit a last second jumper at the buzzer, lifting Washington past No. 16 Arizona 77-75 Saturday for the Pac-10 tournament championship in the first overtime title game in league history.
The match was a back-and-forth affair with each team making crucial shots in the last minute of the game. Washington’s C.J. Wilcox hit a 3-pointer that tied the game 68-all with 7 seconds left in regulation.
Pac-10 player of the year, Derrick Williams, led Arizona in points and rebounds with 24 and 11 respectively.
Thomas led Washington with 28 points, which was also a game high.

The 2011 Pac-10 Conference Basketball Tournament final is upon us, and the two participants are not a surprise, sort of. The Washington Huskies were overwhelming conference favorites heading into the season, but slumped at various times during the season, ending up as the No. 3 seed heading into the tournament. Meanwhile, the Arizona Wildcats were picked to finish second in the conference, in a close battle with UCLA, but Arizona did one better, capturing the regular season conference title.
Both Arizona and Washington are securely in the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats much more so than the Huskies, and the two schools battle today for the automatic berth in March Madness. Arizona beat No. 9 Oregon St. and No. 4 USC in their path to the final, while Washington dispatched No. 6 Washington St. and No. 7 Oregon.
Arizona and Washington split two meetings this season, with each team winning at home. The Huskies won handily in Seattle on January 20, 85-68. The Wildcats won in Tucson on February 19, 87-86, sealing the win with a last-second block by conference Player of the Year Derrick Williams.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Isaiah Thomas led a balanced attack with 10 points and 12 assists, as the third-seeded Washington Huskies handled the seventh-seeded Oregon Ducks, 69-51, in the semifinals of the Pac-10 Conference Tournament.
C.J. Wilcox added 14 points for the Huskies (22-10), who will face top-seeded Arizona in the title game on Saturday.
Terrence Ross and Scott Suggs tallied 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Washington, which defeated California by four points in last season's title game to capture the second Pac-10 crown for the program.
Joevan Catron finished with 18 points and nine rebounds for the Ducks (16-17), who knocked off Arizona State in Wednesday's first round by a 76-69 final, then took down UCLA, 76-59, in Thursday's quarterfinals.
Malcolm Armstead chipped in with 12 points, seven boards, six assists and six steals for Oregon, which got 10 points from E.J. Singler.
The Huskies started the game on a 12-4 run, but a Singler trey and Catron's jumper cut Oregon's deficit to 18-16 with 6:16 left.
Matthew Bryan-Amaning made a pair of free throws to spark a 12-4 Washington surge. Thomas capped the burst with two shots from the charity stripe to make it 30-20. Armstead went one-of-two from the line at the other end to make it a nine-point game at the half.
Five straight points from Justin Holiday gave the Huskies a 44-30 margin with 14:52 to play.
Oregon made things a bit interesting by responding with a 10-0 run. Catron tallied five points during the stretch, including a layup with 9:53 remaining to cut the gap to 44-40.
Ross made a big three-pointer with 7 1/2 minutes left to extend Washington's margin to 50-42. The Ducks never got closer than that the rest of the way.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Derrick Williams scored Arizona's final six points of the game, and the 16th-ranked Wildcats held off the USC Trojans, 67-62, in the semifinals of the Pac-10 Conference Tournament.
Williams ended with 20 points and six rebounds for the top-seeded Wildcats (27-6), who will face third-seeded Washington in the title game on Saturday.
Jesse Perry donated 11 points for Arizona, which has won this tournament a league-best four times.
"Well, I told the guys in the locker room after the game I thought this was our best win of the season," Arizona head coach Sean Miller said. "The reason is we respect USC a great deal. That senior class, and we've gone through some change at Arizona, but you really have to appreciate those kids' effort, not only tonight, but the whole season."
Marcus Simmons finished with a career-high 20 points for the fourth-seeded Trojans (19-14), who played without head coach Kevin O'Neill. Prior to the game, O'Neill was suspended for the rest of the Pac-10 Tournament following his verbal altercation with an Arizona supporter Thursday night.
Nikola Vucevic chipped in 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for Southern California, which defeated fifth-seeded California, 70-56, in the quarters on Thursday.
"There was no anger," Simmons said. "We have a great coaching staff behind Kevin O'Neill. So I knew moving forward our coaches would help us out a lot. Coach Cantu did a great job tonight helping us out. So I just wanted to come out there and play. I hope it's not my last game. NIT, NCAA, either or, I mean we'll do great in either tournament."
Trailing by nine, 58-49, late in the second half, USC put together a 6-0 flurry to make things interesting. Vucevic tallied the final four points of the surge to get the Trojans within three, 58-55, with three minutes left.
Jamelle Horne stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer, and after Jio Fontan made a layup, Williams put home a slam to give Arizona a 63-57 margin with under two minutes remaining.
Fontan made a shot from beyond the arc with 48.1 seconds left to make it a three-point game. Williams made two big free throws at the other end to give the Wildcats a 65-60 edge.
Vucevic made a layup to make it a three-point contest again, but Williams added two more from the line with 3.2 ticks remaining to seal the victory.
A hard-fought first half resulted in Arizona taking a 33-28 lead into the locker room.
Holding a 53-49 lead with over 6 1/2 minutes to play, the Wildcats scored five straight points to build a 58-49 margin on Williams' jumper.
Arizona owns a 58-40 series lead over USC, and the teams split a pair of meetings during the regular season...The Trojans won this tournament in 2009...The Wildcats last won this tourney in 2002...Arizona beat ninth-seeded Oregon State, 78-69, in the quarters on Thursday...Assistant coach Bob Cantu took O'Neill's place.

USC coach Kevin O’Neill has been suspended for the Pac-10 Tournament, his replacement will be assistant coach Bob Cantu, according to USCTrojans.com.
USC Athletic Director Pat Haden said in a statement today, "I have talked to Coach Kevin O’Neill and expressed my disappointment in his involvement in an incident last night in which he and his wife engaged in an argument with a supporter of another school.
“We have met with various parties who have knowledge of the incident. Based on the information we have gathered, I am immediately suspending Coach O’Neill for the balance of the Pac-10 Conference Tournament. We also have set forth additional discipline that will remain private.”
O’Neill then said in his statement expressing his remorse,"I want to apologize to my team, our university and our fans for my involvement last night in an incident with a fan.
“I understand my behavior as the leader of our team was unacceptable. I used poor judgment and put myself, my team and USC in a bad light. I regret that I have let them down.”

The USC Trojans look for their fifth straight Pac-10 Tournament win tonight as they face the No. 1 seed Arizona Wildcats at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Trojans (19-13, 10-8) won the 2009 tournament, but were ineligible for postseason play last year while on probation. The Trojans beat Cal on Thursday, 70-56, to advance to their fourth straight Pac-10 Tournament semifinal for which they were eligible.
USC is in need of a win today to possibly gain an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. They have split their season series with Arizona, with each team winning on its home floor. The Trojans beat Arizona 65-57 at Galen Center on February 24, their fifth win over Arizona in their last six meetings in Los Angeles.
The key for the Trojans defensively will be trying to stop the Pac-10 Player of the Year. Derrick Williams scored 20 points in just 18 minutes in the Wildcats' win over the Trojans on January 29, making all six of his field goal attempts. However, in Los Angeles, Williams scored just eight points in 36 minutes in the loss, on 3-of-11 shooting. Williams scored 22 points last night in Arizona's quarterfinal win over Oregon State.
Here are tonight's probable starting lineups:

Day three of the 2011 Pac-10 Conference Basketball Tournament at Staples Center is upon us, and we are down to the final four. There are two games on the docket for tonight's semifinal round. Here is a look at today's schedule, with all games televised on Fox Sports West (all times are PST):
6 p.m. - No. 1 Arizona Wildcats vs. No. 4 USC Trojans: These two teams split two meeting this season, with each team winning at home. USC needs a win, at least, to make the NCAA Tournament and, given that the game is in Los Angeles, the Trojans have a good chance to advance.
8:30 p.m. - No. 3 Washington Huskies vs. No. 7 Oregon Ducks: E.J. Singler led the Ducks to the upset of the tournament so far, a convincing 76-59 win over the No. 2 UCLA Bruins on Thursday night. Singler has scored 46 points in two games for the Ducks. Washington outlasted their rivals, the Washington State Cougars last night, 89-87. Washington and Oregon split two games this season, with each team winning at home.

Klay Thompson of Washington St. set a Pac-10 Tournament scoring record with 43 points, but a balanced scoring attack gave the No. 3 seed Washington Huskies an 89-87 win over the No. 6 seed Cougars. It was the first win this season for the Huskies, who were led by Isaiah Thomas with 21 points, in three meetings with the Cougars this season. Thomas was one of five Huskies with 12 or more points.
Not only did Thompson set a tournament record for points -- besting the 41 points scored by Leon Powe for Cal in a two-overtime game against Oregon in 2006 -- but he also set a new mark with eight three-pointers made. Salim Stoudamire (Arizona, vs. Washington in 2005) and Bryce Taylor (Oregon, vs. USC in 2007) shared the previous record with seven makes from distance. It was Thompson's first game bacik since getting suspended by the team for the final regular season game after getting cited for marijuana possession last week.
The Cougars led by as many as 13 in the first half, but the Huskies patiently clawed their way back into the game. After going back and forth for a few minutes late in the second half, C.J. Wilcox hit a three-pointer to break a tie and put Washington up for good, 76-73 with 5:06 remaining. Thomas, in addition to his 21 points, dished out 11 assists and had seven rebounds for the Huskies, who will face Oregon in the semifinals on Friday night.

The UCLA Bruins beat the Oregon Ducks in both regular season matchups, but the third time wasn't a charm tonight at Staples Center. E.J. Singler led all scorers with 24 points -- on just nine field goal attampts -- leading the No. 7 Ducks to a 76-59 upset win over the No. 2 Bruins in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Pac-10 Conference Tournament. Oregon reached the semifinals of the Pac-10 tournament for the first time since 2007.
Tyler Honeycutt was the only Bruin to score in double figures, leading UCLA with 19 points. The Bruins shot just 35.2% on the night. Reeves Nelson led UCLA with 10 rebounds, but scored just seven points on 3-of-9 shooting in 28 minutes. UCLA fell behind to Oregon 38-24 at halftime.
Singler also led Oregon in scoring in last night's win over Arizona State, giving him 46 points in two tournament games. The Ducks will face the winner of the Washington vs. Washington State game in Friday's semifinals in the second game, with a tipoff of 8:30 p.m. PST.
Even with the loss, the Bruins are looking pretty solid for an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. UCLA (22-10, 13-5) was projected as a No. 8 seed in the latest Bracketology predictions on SB Nation by Chris Dobbertean. That was before the Bruins' one-and-done performance in the Pac-10 Tournament, but they will still likely get a spot.

Behind 22 points from conference Player of the Year Derrick Williams, the No. 1 seed Arizona Wildcats dispatched the No. 9 Oregon St. Beavers, 78-69, in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Pac-10 Basketball Tournament at Staples Center. It was the second win in three games for the Wildcats against the Beavers this season, as the two teams each won at home in the regular season. Arizona will face No. 4 seed USC, who beat Cal today 70-56, tomorrow night in the semifinals.
Williams made eight of his 12 field goal attempts on the night, including five of six from three-point range. Williams has had an incredible season shooting from beyond the arc, making 34 of 54 threes, a blistering 63.0%. Williams also pulled down seven boards. Solomon Hill nearly had a double-double for the Wildcats, with nine points and 12 rebounds in 27 minutes.
The Beavers lost the game, and their composure. Forward Joe Burton was ejected with 10:25 remaining in the game for throwing a punch to the face of Arizona's Kevin Parrom. Jared Cunningham led Oregon St. with 23 points, while Ahmad Starks chipped in with 17.
Arizona and USC tipz off Friday night at 6 p.m. PST, the first of two semifinal matchups. The two schools each won at home against one another this season. The next quarterfinal game tonight will pit the No. 2 UCLA Bruins against the No. 7 Oregon Ducks, in a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.

In the first quarterfinal match of the Pac 10 basketball tournament, USC beat California soundly, 70-56. USC continues to make their bid as a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament, while California will have to hope for an invite from the NIT. The Staples Center was half full on this weekday afternoon, where a hometown crowd cheered on their Southern California Trojans.
Maurice Jones had 16 points for the Trojans, shooting 6-11 from the field. However the leading scorer on the day was Allen Crabbe of California, who put in 21 points, as Cal’s regular season hero Jorge Gutierrez only contributed four points against a Trojan defense that dominated all but the first ten minutes of the game.
Trailing early, Southern California went on an 18-7 run to close out the half, putting the Bears in a whole they never came close to climbing out of. USC got white hot from behind the arc, making 8 of 17 three pointers. The Trojans were also beasts on the boards, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds.
The Trojans split the season series against the Bears, taking the game in Berkeley but losing the game in Los Angeles. USC now faces the winner of the Arizona/Oregon St. game, which tips off a 2:30 PST.

The No. 4 seed USC Trojans open day two of the 2011 Pac-10 Tournament with an early game against the No. 5 Cal Bears. USC (18-13, 10-8) is firmly on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament, likely in need of at least two wins in the Pac-10 Tournament, if not three (which would get them an automatic bid as tournament champs). USC and Cal split two games this year, with each team winning a close game on the road.
On January 22, Cal took advantage of poor interior defense by the Trojans to win 68-66 at Galen Center in Los Angeles. "It comes down to playing awful, awful defense for five straight minutes at the end, when every time [Cal] threw it in the post, they scored," head coach Kevin O'Neill said after the game. Donte Smith hit eight three-pointers, one shy of the school record, to keep the Trojans in it, but a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer from Jio Fontan fell short, securing the win for Cal.
The Trojans returned the favor at Berkeley on February 17, capturing a 78-75 win. Nikola Vucevic, who had six points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in the first matchup, picked up a double-double in this game with 21 points and 10 boards, leading USC to victory. Senior forward Alex Stepheson picked up a double-double as well, with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Trojans.
USC fell to 3-4 in conference play after that loss in January, but was able to win seven of their last 11 games to secure the No. 4 seed. They have the same Pac-10 record as Cal (17-13, 10-8), but USC captured the tiebreaker due to their superior record (1-1) against the top seed in the conference, Arizona. Of course, all that tiebreaker got the Trojans today is the ability to wear home uniforms.
Today's 12 p.m. PST game will be televised on Fox Sports West. The winner of today's contest faces the winner of Arizona vs. Oregon St. on Friday night.

After dealing with the riffraff that is the bottom seeds of day one of the 2011 Pac-10 Conference Basketball Tournament, the action at Staples Center gets into full swing on Thursday. There are four games on the docket for today's quarterfinal round. Here is a look at today's schedule, with all games televised on Fox Sports West (all times are PST):
12 p.m. -- No. 4 USC Trojans vs. No. 5 California Golden Bears: It's a shame that the best game of the day takes place while everyone is at work. USC and Cal split two meetings this year, with each team winning close games on the road.
2:30 p.m. -- No. 1 Arizona Wildcats vs. No. 9 Oregon St. Beavers: The Beavers won last night against Stanford, and their reward is to face the well-rested regular season conference champs. Both teams won at home in their series this year.
6 p.m. -- No. 2 UCLA Bruins vs. No. 7 Oregon Ducks: The Bruins have beaten the Ducks twice this season, and look to do so for a third time in the first game of the night session. Oregon beat Arizona St. last night to advance.
8:30 p.m. -- No. 3 Washington Huskies vs. No. 6 Washington St. Cougars: The prime time game happens to be the only rivalry game on the schedule. The Huskies, preseason favorites to win the conference, ended up in third place, thanks largely to their two losses to Washington State. This is a matchup of suspensions, as Venoy Overton is out for the entire tournament, while Klay Thompson of Washington State has been reinstated after serving a one-game suspension over the weekend.

The state of Oregon won day one of the 2011 Pac-10 Conference Basketball Tournament. After the Oregon St. Beavers defeated the Stanford Cardinal to open the tournament on Thursday night, the No. 7 Oregon Ducks won the second game, 76-69 over the No. 10 Arizona St. Sun Devils. The Ducks advance to face the UCLA Bruins on Thursday.
Sophomore forward E.J. Singler led the Ducks with 22 points, and made four three-pointers. Joevan Catron, who led the Ducks in scoring this season, was held to nine points on 3-of-12 shooting. Sophomore guard Trent Lockett led the Sun Devils with 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, but was limited with foul trouble to 28 minutes.
The win by the Ducks was the first this season over the Sun Devils. Arizona St. only had four conference wins all season, but two of them were against Oregon. The Ducks play the No. 2 seed UCLA Bruins on Thursday at 6 p.m., in the third of four quarterfinal games on tomorrow's schedule. UCLA swept Oregon this season, winning 67-59 at the new Matthew Knight Arena on January 15, and 64-54 at Pauley Pavilion on February 10.

In the opening game of the 2011 Pac-10 Conference Basketball Tournament, the No. 9 Oregon St. Beavers defeated the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal 69-67 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Oregon State advanced to face the Arizona Wildcats in the second of four games on Thursday. Jared Cunningham led the Beavers with 24 points, and tied a Pac-10 Tournament record with 15 free throws made. Cunningham set a new record with 20 attempts from the charity stripe.
Big man Joe Burton grabbed 14 rebounds for Oregon St., to go with his seven points, six assists, and three steals. There were a ton of rebounds in this game -- 82 in total, 42 of which went to Oregon St. -- mostly because it was an ugly game with a lot of bricks. Oregon State shot 35.7% for the game, and they were the better shooting team. Stanford shot just 32.8% for the game, continuing a bad shooting trend for them in Los Angeles this year. The Cardinal shot a season-low 22.2% in a loss to USC at Galen Center on January 20, and then two days later made just 30.8% of their field goals in a loss at UCLA. In three games in Los Angeles this season, Stanford shot just 28.6%.
Oregon State will play top seed Arizona Thursday at 2:30 p.m., in the second game on the schedule. The Beavers and Wildcats split their two games this season, with each team winning at home. However, after their home win over Arizona on January 2, Oregon St. lost 13 of their next 16 games before tonight's victory.

The 2011 Pac-10 Conference Tournament doesn't start until Wednesday, with the top six teams not having to play until Thursday, but there was some big news involving the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds on Tuesday. UCLA junior guard Malcolm Lee has a small cartilage tear in his left knee, but isn't expected to miss any playing time. Meanwhile, Washington senior guard Venoy Overton has been suspended by the team for reportedly giving alcohol to a minor.
Lee was named to the All Pac-10 First Team as well as the All Pac-10 Defensive Team, and is expected to play Thursday against the winner of Oregon vs. Arizona St Wednesday matchup. "He has a small tear in cartilage, that's why he had mild swelling," head coach Ben Howland said, "He should be good to go on Thursday." Lee didn't practice today, but will go through some shooting drills on Wednesday.
As for Overton, a three-month investigation determined that he furnished alcohol to a minor at a party in January. Once Overton was charged today with a crime, Huskies' coach Lorenzo Romar suspended Overton for the entirety of the Pac-10 tournament, per The Seattle Times:
"As far as I'm concerned, behavior needs to change and we have to learn from our mistakes. Mistakes are going to be made, but every situation is different. I don't think you handle every situation the same way sometimes. It's important from here on out that we learn from this and go from here."
Overton averages 6.0 points for the Huskies, but is considered a defensive specialist.

The 2011 Pac-10 Tournament starts Wednesday at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Saturday was the final regular season day on the schedule, and the seeds are now set. UCLA clinched the second seed today with their win in Pullman against Washington State. Regular season champion Arizona heads into the tournament on a two-game winning streak after sweeping the Oregon schools this weekend.
There were two tiebreakers invoked. USC and Cal tied for fourth place at 10-8, and split their season series. The next tiebreaker is record against the team occupying the highest seed in the standings. USC wins by going 1-1 against conference champ Arizona, while Cal was 0-2 against the Wildcats. Oregon and Stanford tied for seventh at 7-11, and split their season series. Both the Ducks and Cardinal had the same records against Arizona (0-2), UCLA (0-2), and Washington (1-1). USC and Cal were next at 10-8; Oregon wins the tiebreaker with Stanford via their 2-2 combined record against USC and Cal, compared to 1-3 for Stanford.

The 2011 Pac-10 Tournament starts on Wednesday at Staples Center. Today is the final day of regular season conference battles, and the seeds are beginning to take shape. Here are today's results so far:
Here is an updated look at the seeds and scenarios:
Arizona Wildcats (14-4 in conference): locked into the No. 1 seed
UCLA Bruins (13-5): locked into the No. 2 seed
Washington Huskies (11-6): locked into the No. 3 seed
USC Trojans (9-8): will be No. 4 seed with a win over Washington or loss by Cal; Trojans are 1-1 against both Cal and Washington State, but would win any tiebreaker over those teams due to their 1-1 record against top-seed Arizona, as both Cal and WSU lost twice to Arizona.
California Golden Bears (9-8): will be No. 4 seed with a win over Stanford and loss by both USC; will be No. 5 seed with a loss to Stanford or a win by USC.
Washington St. Cougars (9-9): locked into No. 6 seed
Stanford Cardinal (7-10): will be No. 7 seed if they beat Cal or if USC loses
Oregon Ducks (7-11): will be No. 7 seed if USC wins and Cal wins
Oregon St. Beavers (5-13): No. 9 seed

The 2011 Pac-10 Tournament will begin on Wednesday at Staples Center. The bottom four seeds (seven through 10) will play on Wednesday, with the top six teams getting a bye to Thursday. The top six teams have already been determined: Arizona, UCLA, Washington, USC, Cal, and Washington State. Today is the final regular season game for all 10 conference teams, and here's a look at the possible scenarios regarding seeding.
Arizona Wildcats (14-4 in conference): locked into the No. 1 seed; beat Oregon today
UCLA Bruins (12-5): will be No. 2 seed with win at Washington State, or loss by Washington to USC; would be No. 3 seed with a loss to the Cougars and a Washington win
Washington Huskies (11-6): can be No. 2 seed with a win over USC and a loss by UCLA; will be No. 3 seed with either a loss to USC or a UCLA win
USC Trojans (9-8): will be No. 4 seed with a win over Washington or losses by both Washington State and Cal; Trojans are 1-1 against both Cal and Washington State, but would win any tiebreaker over those teams due to their 1-1 record against top-seed Arizona, as both Cal and WSU lost twice to Arizona.
Washington St. Cougars (9-8): will be No. 4 seed with a win over UCLA and a loss by USC; Cougars are 1-1 against Cal, but would win tiebreaker with Bears based on 2-0 record over Washington (both teams would have the same record against both Arizona and UCLA); Cougars would lose tiebreaker with Cal if both teams lost today, based on Cal's superior record against UCLA
California Golden Bears (9-8): will be No. 4 seed with a win over Stanford and losses by both USC and Washington State; if Cal, USC, and Washington State all lose today, Bears would be No. 5 seed.
Stanford Cardinal (7-10): will be No. 7 seed with a win over Cal or a loss by USC
Oregon Ducks (7-11): will be No. 7 if Cal beats Stanford and USC beats Washington; Ducks would win the tiebreaker in this scenario because of their superior record against USC and Cal combined (Stanford and Oregon have the same record against Arizona, UCLA, and Washington, and both are 1-1 against WSU)
Oregon St. Beavers (5-12): No. 9 seed
Arizona St. Sun Devils (3-14): No. 10 seed
