The UCLA Bruins visited the Stanford Cardinal on Thursday night in the first Pac-12 faceoff of the season for either team. After a very close and hard-fought game, the Bruins came away on the losing end. UCLA's Lazeric Jones led all scorers with 26 points en route to the 60-59 loss.
UCLA started the game with a 4-0 lead before Stanford went on a big run, shutting out the Bruins for over nine minutes of play. The Bruins went on a late tear before halftime and finished the half only down by a score of 24-23.
The game remained close throughout the second half, with UCLA managing to tie the game again and again, yet never managing to take the lead after halftime.
After a Tyler Lamb jumper late in the second half, Stanford's lead stood at just 60-59 with 0:49 remaining and UCLA out of timeouts. Stanford missed their shot, after which the Bruins missed a three. On a held-ball situation, the Bruins were awarded the ball with nine seconds left. They inbounded the ball and got it over to their star player, Lazeric Jones. Jones took a shot, which was blocked by Stanford's Josh Huestis. The ball skittered down the court toward UCLA's basket as time expired, the Bruins taking the close loss.
Lamb and Joshua Smith put up 10 points each for the Bruins. Smith picked up six rebounds. David Wear had two points and eight rebounds.
With the loss, UCLA's record falls to 7-6, while Stanford improves to 11-2.
