NCAA Basketball Scores And Results: Joshua Smith, UCLA Bruins Impressive In Win Over UC Davis

Though it has been a trying college basketball season so far for the local teams, the weekend did provide hope in at least one regard. The UCLA Bruins played an overmatched UC Davis squad on Saturday and didn't let up, cruising to an 82-39 win and their most impressive win of the season to date.

Joshua Smith, who disappointed for most of the first nine games of the season, dominated his time on the court on Saturday at Honda Center in Anaheim, with 18 points, 10 boards and three blocks. UCLA will need Smith if it is to live up to anywhere close to its preseason expectations as one of the best teams in the conference.

The win on Saturday brought the Bruins to .500 on the season, including 3-0 since Reeves Nelson was kicked off the team. As Bruins Nation noted, "Ah no, beating a bad UC Davis team does not mean that. BUT the way the Bruins won does mean MAYBE this team can be a good team. For the Bruins did something that they had not done since the years of Ben Ball and the final fours: they played for 40 minutes."

UCLA has a pair of non-conference games this week against UC Irvine and Richmond before beginning conference play on December 29.

UCLA Vs. UC Davis Basketball: Bruins Get 82-39 Blowout Win, Get Back To .500

Joshua Smith had season highs with 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading the UCLA Bruins to an 82-39 blowout win over the overmatched UC Davis Aggies on Saturday afternoon at Honda Center in Anaheim. With the win, UCLA moved to .500 for the first time this season.

Smith in many ways has been emblematic of the Bruins' poor start this season, as he came into the game averaging 8.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. A combination of poor conditioning, poor play, and foul trouble limited Smith to just 16.8 minutes per game. However, Smith was effective and active in his 29 minutes on Saturday, picking up his first double-double of the year, to go along with three blocks.

The Bruins got off to a 29-4 start to open the game, and never looked back. David Wear added 15 points and six rebounds for UCLA, while Tyler Lamb nearly had a triple-double with nine points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Anthony Stover blocked five shots for the Bruins, who outrebounded UC Davis 49-33 on the game.

UC Davis shot just 23.6% (13 for 55) for the game, and had no players score in double figures. Josh Ritchart, the Aggies' leading scorer on the season, led UC Davis on Saturday with eight points. UC Davis has lost six straight games to fall to 1-9 on the season.

The Bruins are 3-0 since Reeves Nelson was dismissed from the team. UCLA (5-5) next hosts the UC Irvine Anteaters on Tuesday night at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

UCLA Vs. UC Davis Game Score: Bruins Dominate First Half, Lead 43-15

The UCLA Bruins completely overmatched the UC Davis Aggies early on Saturday, and take a 43-15 lead into halftime at Honda Center in Anaheim. The Aggies had no match inside for the Bruins, as Joshua Smith and David Wear combined for 23 points and seven rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

UCLA outrebounded UC Davis 24-13 in the opening half, and held the Aggies to just 19.2% shooting (five for 26). The Bruins had runs of 10-0 and 18-0 and were up 29-4 at one point. For a while it looked like UCLA might have set a new school record for fewest points allowed in a half, but the nine points scored by Howard against the Bruins in 1983 still stands.

The Bruins shot 53.6% (15 for 28) in the first half, including making 14 of 20 (70%) two-point field goals. With a win on Saturday, the Bruins would move to .500 on the season.

Records: UCLA (4-5); UC Davis (1-8).

Location: Honda Center, Anaheim, California; the second of four games by the Bruins in Anaheim this season.
