Lakers rumors: Dwight Howard injury could open roster spot for rookie

With the status of newly-acquired Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard up in the air as he recovers from a back injury, a roster spot could be available for rookie center Ronnie Aguilar to make the roster.

Per Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports via Twitter, the 7-footer out of Colorado State University is a "dark horse" to make the team out of training camp. This news is indicative of the Lakers' commitment to taking Howard's rehab cautiously. The team has not made a firm indication of how long he may be out, but the their willingness to move forward and add more depth at center suggests he could miss at least some regular season games.

Howard averaged 20.6 points and 14.5 rebounds per game in 2011 and brings a new dynamic of athleticism and speed to the center position that the team was missing with former Lakers All-Star Andrew Bynum. In Howard's absence, the team's young big men will have big shoes to fill.

Lakers Add Former UCSB Center Greg Somogyi

According to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports via Twitter, the Los Angeles Lakers have signed 7'3 rookie center Greg Somogyi.

Somogyi played his collegiate career for UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Conference, where he was a four-year letter winner under head coach Bob Williams and averaged 3.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks during his career with the Gauchos.

Most recently, Somogyi played with the Lakers' 2012 Summer League team and averaged 1.2 points and 1.6 rebounds, in 7.2 minutes per contest.

It was earlier reported that the team also signed Reeves Nelson out of UCLA, who also played for the Lakers' Summer League squad in 2012. Because of the team's policy on releasing the terms of agreements, the contract information was not made available.

Chris Paul Shrugs Off New Look Lakers

Los Angeles Clippers' All-Star guard Chris Paul isn't concerned with the Los Angeles Lakers' star-studded lineup and recent acquisitions of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash.

On the Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday when asked about the new-look Lakers, he responded:

"Why should I be [nervous]? At the end of the day, you have to play the games. When we got to the Olympics, if you looked at our roster, you could've just given us the medal but you have to play the games and that's what makes it so exciting."

Paul could have joined forces with Bryant and Co. given the trade that never came to fruition due to NBA intervention involving Pau Gasol and former Sixth Man of the Year turned disgruntled role-player, Lamar Odom.

But instead, he will prepare to continue the newly-intensified inner-city rivalry that has been revitalized in Los Angeles as he recovers from thumb surgery. The battle for L.A. is alive and well, and it will make for some exciting basketball in 2012-2013.

Los Angeles Lakers Have 3 of NBA's 10 Highest Paid Players

According to Hoopsworld.com, three Los Angeles Lakers players -- Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol -- will rank among the NBA's 10 highest-paid players during the 2012-13 season.

Bryant tops the list with a salary of $27,849,149. That's nearly $7 million more than the next highest-paid player, Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks, who's set to earn $20,907,128.

Newly acquired center Howard ranks sixth, with a '12-'13 salary of $19,536,360 for the year. New frontcourt mate Gasol is right behind him in seventh ($19 million even).

The Lakers have never been shy about spending money on players, but the new constraints of the post-lockout collective bargaining agreement will make this lineup very costly for the team in the long run. They will pay a significantly higher luxury-tax rate following the upcoming season than they have in years' past.

Winning NBA titles is a pricey business, but the Lakers have a history of being willing to invest whatever it takes to remain among the league's elite franchises.

Lakers Finish Second In ESPN Western Conference Standings Projections

ESPN released their Western Conference Standings projections for the 2012-2013 season and they predict the Los Angeles Lakers will finish second in the conference behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The two teams were predicted to have the same record of 59-23 but the Thunder were given the tiebreaker based on ESPN's decimal rankings from the 100 people on the panel surveyed for the list.

With the addition of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash, the Lakers are once again in title contention but the Thunder are still the team to beat in the Western Conference.

The Lakers finishing second in the Western Conference means they would also be the Pacific Division champ over their LA counterparts, the Los Angeles Clippers, who finished fourth in the projections behind the third-place San Antonio Spurs.

Dwight Howard Trade: Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak Recounts How Deal Went Down

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak thought the Dwight Howard deal was dead.

Recounted in the Orange County Register, Kupchak went from reviewing the Lakers roster with executive vice president of player personnel Jim Buss with Andrew Bynum as the starting center, to fielding a phone call from Orlando Magic general manager Rob Hennigan that afternoon.

What transpired was the trade that landed Howard in LA, Bynum in Philly with the 76ers, Andre Iguodala on the Denver Nuggets and a group of players and assets heading to the Magic.

Kupchak didn't hide his frustration as the days turned into weeks and nothing on the Howard front was coming to fruition.

"I just never felt that there was a deal that they thought that they would do," Kupchak said. "Without going into great detail, I just felt the Magic were just canvassing the league, which is the job. ... I didn't think there would be a deal. It got really quiet a couple weeks ago. Before that, it was very crazy - and then it just died. So we had kind of moved on.

"We had signed Jordan Hill. We had signed Antawn Jamison. And we thought it was over."

The Lakers landed their big man and drastically changed the landscape in the Western Conference and the NBA. The Lakers were back as major contenders.

"Looking back on it, he did exactly what he was supposed to do," Kupchak said of Hennigan. "He took his time. He looked at every opportunity, narrowed it down, negotiated, went back to a different team, negotiated some more, kept on coming back to you."

What came back in the deal was Howard. So you can say that Kupchak did his job as well.

Charles Barkley Picks Lakers Over Thunder In NBA Western Conference

Sir Charles Barkley is as about as opinionated at they come and Friday he shared on the Dan Patrick Show that he believes the Los Angeles Lakers will trump Oklahoma City in this coming year's western conference finals.

Although the NBA Hall of Famer did express his concern with Steve Nash and Dwight Howard ability to stay healthy throughout the season, he ultimately went with the new and improved Lakers due to OKC's inability to score in the low post.

And on paper, Barkley's analysis does seem to have some validity. The Thunder, a team that already struggles to get easy buckets, would now have to face Howard's pick-and-roll eating presence in the middle for a theoretical seven game series. Even if the new Superman doesn't get back to his old level, he still has enough natural ability to manhandle the best the Thunder have to offer (Kendrick Perkins?).

No doubt the western conference still goes through Oklahoma City but it seems Barkley may be ahead of the curve in saying "you're not going to win championships just shooting jumpers."

Lakers Offseason News: Eddie Jordan, Bernie Bickerstaff To Join Coaching Staff Soon

The Los Angeles Lakers and head coach Mike Brown have been looking to finalize their coaching staff for the upcoming season. According to a report from the Orange County Register, Eddie Jordan and Bernie Bickerstaff are set to become the newest members of the franchise.

It hasn't exactly been a secret around the NBA that Lakers head coach Mike Brown has been courting Eddie Jordan to join his staff as an assistant coach. The official hiring of Jordan, who played for the Lakers in 1980-83 and '84, is expected to occur in the coming days - and Brown will be hiring longtime NBA sage Bernie Bickerstaff, too.

Bickerstaff, 68, has been around the league for nearly four decades now. His experience dealing with a wide range of players and personalities should be a great asset for the Lakers as they look to gel Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol with Steve Nash and Dwight Howard.

Jordan, 57, was most recently the head coach with the Philadelphia 76ers from 2009-2010. He also has experience as the head coach with the Wizards and Kings. The main reason for the hiring: Jordan has a deep background working with the Princeton Offense, which is what the Lakers will primarily run in 2012-13.

Look for the official announcements to be made in the near future.

Lakers To Reportedly Hire Steve Clifford As Assistant Coach

The Los Angeles Lakers aren't only revamping their roster, they are also retooling their coaching staff, which reportedly will include former Orlando Magic assistant Steve Clifford, according to Silver Screen and Roll.

After a decade of coaching in the college ranks, Clifford came to the NBA as an advance scout for the New York Knicks before moving up as an assistant coach under hall of famer Don Nelson. He then worked for both Jeff Van Gundy with the Houston Rockets and Stan Van Gundy with the Orlando Magic, where he was until this year.

Clifford will come to the Lake Show along with Dwight Howard, bringing the experience of working with Superman, as well as his focus on the defensive end of the court, which will help complement Mike Brown's offensive stylings. The Magic finished in the top 10 in defense every year in which Clifford coached.

Dwight Howard Trade: Andrew Bynum Excited For Larger Role With Philadelphia 76ers

As the Philadelphia 76ers officially announced big man Andrew Bynum on Wednesday, the former Los Angeles Laker had some interesting things to say about his role with the new team, more specifically the larger role he expects to have under the Doug Collins regime.

Bynum played it cool when asked if he was happy about the change from L.A. to Philly, noting that he thought it was time for a change in his career. He also said things like this:

Per Hardword Paroxysm on Twitter:

Wow indeed. Bynum has played second fiddle to Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol for years now, and must feel the move to the 76ers makes him the go-to guy out in Philly. Still, they have a lot of solid talent out East, and might not make Bynum the centerpiece he feels he should be.

In terms the long-term status of his career, Bynum also noted that he sees Philadelphia as a place he can make his home. He could commit to them now, but get no more than three years and $60 million. If he waits until the seaosn is over, he could fetch upwards of five years deal and $100 million.

Bynum, a seven-year NBA vet, made his first All-Star game of his career in 2012. He averaged 18.7 points and 11.7 rebounds a game last season.

Dwight Howard In a Lakers Uniform Sends Ticket Prices Through the Roof

Dwight Howard's contribution to the Los Angeles Lakers' 2012-2013 season has only been in publicity photos so far, but the other impact he is starting to make is on Lakers ticket prices.

The LAtimes.com is reporting that Lakers games, which used to average a borderline crazy $156 per seat is now creeping/skyrocketing up since the Lakers made several high-profile roster overhauls. Granted, this average also includes the huge disparity between a nosebleed seat and sitting next to Jack Nicholson.

Even after the Nash acquisition July 4, Fansnap.com General Manager Mike Janes said average ticket prices climbed up to a relatively modest $175. The price then increased to $250 by the end of July, with Janes suggesting the market anticipated the Lakers would make another blockbuster deal. It predicted correctly.

It is no surprise that ticket prices and demand are rising for the Lakers, as after the acquisition of Howard they were instantly launched into the title contention chatter. However, some of the marquee games are getting a bit out of control. The defending champs will only set you back $575 per ticket on January 17. A Christmas Day present to the significant other against the Knicks is merely $450.

The addition of Howard brings along massive levels of hype, which current ticket owners will be able to cash in on easily as a city of fans wish they could attend a game.

"There's more sellers wanting higher asking prices to selling the tickets," (Mike Janes) said. "The second thing is more will make the decision to go to more games. That will push supply down. In this supply-demand balance, there will be a lot of demand. If the supply isn't what's it's been in the past, buyers will have to compete more for tickets."

Andrew Bynum To Get Knees Treated In Germany A La Kobe Bryant

When Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees had troubles with their knees and getting them into athletic shape, they had theirs treated in Germany with platelet-rich plasma therapy. Bryant had another remarkable MVP-caliber season. Rodriguez has also sought such treatment in the past.

Now it's a man who has struggled with knee injuries his whole life. Former Laker turned Philadelphia 76er Andrew Bynum is giving it a go. Matt Moore of CBS Sports filed this report from John Mitchell of the Philadelphia Enquirer that discusses Bynum making the off-season pilgrimage to Philadelphia.

The procedure, known as Orthokine/Regenokine, will be performed by Dr. Peter Wehling. Bryant initially underwent the procedure to prevent the inevitable wearing down of his knee cartilage. The procedure is a derivation of platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP. The procedure, which is not yet performed in the United States, is less invasive than many, if not all, other forms of knee surgeries presently used.

According to the source, Bynum is not feeling any pain in his knees. However, the center wants to explore any options that will help to prolong the healthy status of his knees. According to the source, Bynum was so impressed with the results that Bryant experienced last season that he agreed that exploring the procedure was a viable option.

Bynum has struggled through most of his career with knee issues. In his rookie year, he had arthroscopic surgery on his kneecap and missed his team's run to the Finals. In his third season in the league he had some breakout performances but tore his MCL in his right knee and missed 8-12 weeks. Bynum then injured his knee during his team's second championship run and had delayed surgery in the off-season that forced him to miss the start of the upcoming season. He then hyper-extended his right knee during the course of last year before finally having a fairly healthy 2011-12 campaign.

Lakers Offseason 2012: Jodie Meeks Knows His Role

Jodie Meeks can't wait to get on the basketball floor with his new teammates. And it's refreshing to see a guy who completely understands what his role will be when he signs with a new team. He knows that he will be the guy who backs up the incomparable Kobe Bryant as told to the Los Angeles Times.

"I'm looking forward to playing together with someone who will be in the Hall of Fame one day and go down as one of the best who ever played," Meeks told the Los Angeles Times. "I'll take pride in hoping to help him out with his minutes. Last year, he played a lot of minutes. So if I can go in there and take some minutes off of him, it will help the team out."

With the additions of Meeks and Antawn Jamison, and of course, Steve Nash and Dwight Howard, Bryant can look around the locker room and see other people who can put the ball in the basket. Playing 32 minutes and averaging 22-24 points while preserving himself for the postseason is something Bryant could be able to do with guys like Meeks surrounding him.

Dwight Howard Trade: Lakers Center's Doctor Discusses Back Injury

The big issue with Dwight Howard going into next season is how healthy his back actually is. Howard had back surgery this offseason, forcing him to miss the playoffs and eventually what would've been his second straight Olympic appearance.

Thankfully it sounds like the Lakers center will be in good health sooner rather than later. Dr. Lionel Hunt, chief of spine surgery at Cedar Sinai, talked about Howard's back on ESPN Radio, and had this info to relate on how quickly the injury should heal.

Here is the bullet point summary of the injury

  • Howard should be able to resume weight training and basketball activity in a matter of weeks.
  • He'd be more concerned about Bynum's knees (which will always be injury-prone) compared to Howard's back, which are more of an acute injury rather than chronic.
  • There should be a few months of recovery, and there is a possibility Howard could be ready close to the early of the season.
  • Basically, the back injury won't be a huge issue and shouldn't affect Howard's ability all that much, making this trade to jettison Bynum quite worth it.

Dwight Howard Trade: Andrew Bynum Welcomed To Philadelphia

Andrew Bynum, welcome to the City of Brotherly Love! In an effort to make the former-Laker feel at home in his new surroundings, the Philadelphia 76ers quickly posted a billboard to celebrate his arrival as shown in this tweet from 76ers PR guru Michael Preston.

Bynum_billboard_medium

Bynum had been mentioned in trade rumors for months before the young star was involved in a four-team trade that sent disgruntled Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers and Andrew to Philly. After spending all seven years of his career under the bright lights of Hollywood, Bynum's new surroundings will be closer to home, just two-hours down the interstate from his alma mater St. Joseph's High School in Metuchen, New Jersey.

Andrew has yet to make his first official appearance as a member of the 76ers. All that changes on Wednesday at 9:15AM PDT, when Bynum has his first press conference with the Philadelphia media. The event will be streamed live from National Constitution Center on NBA.com.

Lakers Signings: Devin Ebanks And Jodie Meeks Are Official

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially signed two more players to their roster, and they're two signings we already knew would be happening in Devin Ebanks and Jodie Meeks.

Ebanks figures to be the primary small forward off the bench, now that Matt Barnes is unlikely to be re-signed, and his primary role will be to back up Metta World Peace. Meeks also figures to have a bench role as the primary backup to Kobe Bryant. Bryant spent a lot of time on the floor last season, and considering he's already played the Olympics as well, rest will be necessary to heal his body. Meeks will have a critical role and should see plenty of minutes during the season as Bryant reduces his minutes before building back up for the playoffs. Meeks's primary responsibility will probably be as a three point shooter, as he hit 37% from downtown last season.

Ebanks and Meeks join Antwan Jamison as the smaller, but critical, signings that will try to ensure that the Lakers have enough quality depth behind one of the most exciting starting lineups in the NBA in Bryant, Pau Gasol, World Peace, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash.

Lakers Offseason 2012: Devin Ebanks To Re-Sign On Monday

With all the excitement surrounding the recent trade of Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers, fans almost forgot about the up-and-coming small forward that was still looking to sign his contract with the club to continue his career with the team.

Devin Ebanks will finally sign his $1.05 million qualifying offer after he takes his physical on Monday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"[Ebanks] feels they know him now and what he's capable of and can contribute," agent David Bauman told the Los Angeles Times. "He's going to be given a chance to get a role on the team."

The Lakers are lining up to be two-deep at every position with Ebanks providing small forward depth behind Metta World Peace. Recently signed Antawn Jamison can also spend time at that position as well as Kobe Bryant in small lineups so that position is in good hands.

Lakers Offseason 2012: Payroll Stands At Almost $100 Million For 2012-13 Season

It takes large amounts of paper to be the boss. But the Lakers are used to it by now.

After acquiring Dwight Howard, Chris Duhon and Earl Clark on Friday along with the signings of Devin Ebanks and Jodie Meeks, the payroll for only 14 players has ballooned to $99.7 million for the 2012-13 season. One more spot on the roster still needs to be filled and more than likely that spot will go to one of the Lakers second round picks - either Darius Johnson-Odom or Robert Sacre - which will put a little less than half a million more on the payroll.

This puts the Lakers in position to pay almost $30 million ($29.4 million to be exact) next June in luxury tax payments. They call them luxury tax because it's a luxury that the Lakers can afford to take on such a financial burden as they have aggressively reshaped their roster into an on-paper powerhouse capable to toppling the reigning Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder and defending NBA Champion Miami Heat,

Lakers Sign Guard Jodie Meeks

As if their acquisition of superstar center Dwight Howard on Friday wasn't enough, the Los Angeles Lakers found time to make another transaction. Backup shooting guard Jodie Meeks has signed with the purple and gold as well.

Meeks signed a two-year deal worth $3 million, per Mark Medina and Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times, with the second year a team option. Meeks, the former University of Kentucky standout, shot 36.5% from three-point range in 2011-2012 with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Meeks averaged 8.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game last season, in 24.9 minutes per contest. In the 2010-2011 season he averaged a career-high 10.5 points and 27.5 minutes per game, and shot a career-best 39.7% from distance.

Ben Rosales at Silver Screen and Roll likes Meeks as a shooter to help the Lakers in reserve.

"Meeks is a career 37.1 3P% shooter who will be asked to do exactly that on the Lakers: spot up from behind the arc and shoot off kick outs from the rest of their ridiculously talented roster," Rosales wrote. "Past possibly Miami, there is no place in the league more attractive right now to shooting specialists."

Dwight Howard Arrives, Discusses Relationship With Kobe Bryant And Changing Attitude

Dwight Howard is finally a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. After what seemed like endless trade rumors and deals that were reportedly close to happening, a four-team trade with L.A. and the Magic, Nuggets and 76ers finally brought the big man to SoCal.

Howard met with the media on Friday afternoon and had a few interesting things to say.

As expected, D12 emphasized that he would have no trouble getting along with Kobe Bryant. The two have not always gotten along in the past, but both appear willing to work with each other to make it work in Los Angeles.

"I'm looking forward to learning how to be a leader from Kobe," said Howard.

As for his surgically repaired back -- an issue that plagued him throughout last season and caused him to miss the playoffs -- Howard will not rush back to the court. All reports indicate he is recovering well and should be healthy for the 2012-13 season, but don't expect him to get into the swing of things anytime soon. There is no timetable as of right now.

Finally, Howard had this to say to the media and his fans.

Hey, there's nowhere to go but up.

Dwight Howard Trade Official: Deal Involves 4 Teams, 12 Players, 5 Draft Picks

The NBA held a conference call on Friday morning, and the trade is now official: Dwight Howard is the newest member of the Los Angeles Lakers. The four-team deal between the Lakers, the Orlando Magic, Denver Nuggets, and Philadelphia 76ers is now complete.

Howard, the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, is obviously the big prize in the deal for the Lakers, but the team also took on guards Chris Duhon and Earl Clark as well.

The Lakers traded Andrew Bynum to Philadelphia, close to his New Jersey hometown, and shipped Josh McRoberts and Christian Eyenga to Orlando, and sent a conditional 2017 first round pick and conditional 2015 second round pick to the Magic.

"We’d like to thank Andrew for all he’s done for the team and the organization," said Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak in a statement. "Andrew has been with us since we drafted him at seventeen years old and over the last seven years we have watched him develop into an All-Star player who has helped the team win two NBA Championships. He’s a special talent with a bright future. We appreciate all of his contributions and wish him well for the remainder of his career."

The 76ers added Jason Richardson as well, while the Nuggets received Andre iguodala.

The Magic received Al Harrington, Eyenga, McRoberts, Moe Harkless, former UCLA Bruins guard Arron Afflalo, former USC Trojans center Nikola Vucevic, plus a 2013 first round pick and 2014 second round pick from Denver, from the Lakers, plus a conditional first round pick from Philadelphia.

Dwight Howard Trade: Magic Also Receive Josh McRoberts, According To Report

Details of the blockbuster Dwight Howard trade continue to come out slowly, even though the deal is not complete as it awaits NBA approval. We know most of the biggest pieces of the deal, but the Lakers, Magic, 76ers and Nuggets continue to work out all the kinks to make this deal official.

One such small detail is Josh McRoberts being sent to Orlando, according to report.

Per Sports Illustrated's Sam Amick on Twitter:

The main cogs of this trade include Howard to the Lakers, Andre Iguodala to the Denver Nuggets, Andrew Bynum and Jason Richardson to the Philadelphia 76ers and Arron Afflalo, Al Harrington and three first-round draft picks going to the Orlando Magic. now McRoberts will be heading to Florida along with those picks.

McRoberts saw time in 50 games for L.A. last season, averaging 2.8 points and 3.4 rebounds in 14.4 minutes of floor time.

Dwight Howard Trade Reopens Lakers' Championship Window

Mitch Kupchak has been waiting all summer. He's been patiently marking his time, waiting for Dwight Howard to come available at the right price. Now, according to "multiple sources" cited by ESPN, it's actually happening. Barring a dramatic and unforeseen turn of events, on Friday morning the Orlando Magic will trade Howard to the Lakers, who will part with Andrew Bynum but not, crucially, Pau Gasol. That's the deal Kupchak has been gunning for all along, and if you didn't think he could pull it off you haven't been paying attention.

The trade is a four-teamer, with the Nuggets and 76ers chipping in to make it all work. Philly will end up with Bynum and send Andre Iguodala to the Nugs. The Sixers will also get Jason Richardson from Orlando, while the Magic come away with the tanking-friendly package of Arron Afflalo, Al Harrington, Nikola Vucevic and picks. Throughout the day Thursday reports conflicted about whether Gasol would be moved in the deal, but ESPN's Marc Stein is reporting that the version getting phoned into league offices on Friday does not include Pau.

Assuming this unfolds as expected, Kupchak has orchestrated a virtuoso offseason comparable to Jerry West's legendary summer of '96. With the additions of Howard and Steve Nash, not to mention Antawn Jamison and Jordan Hill, Kupchak transformed the Lakers in a span of about five weeks. What had been an aging team obviously in its twilight is now the favorite to win the Western Conference and a good bet to bring home the franchise's 17th championship banner. Rarely in league history has a team boasted the star-level talent the Lakers will deploy next season.

Howard's impact will be greatest at the defensive end of the floor. Bynum had occasional stretches of defensive dominance but Dwight is more consistently influential at that end. His Orlando teams have been at or near the top of the league's defensive tables almost every year of his career, and there's no reason to think he can't make the Lakers' D elite. On offense, Dwight's existence will be so, so much easier than it was in Orlando. Nash and Pau, two of the best passers ever at their positions, will feed him as many lobs as he can handle. Double-teams will be much less frequent. Pick-and-roll dunks will be very frequent.

Nothing, of course, is guaranteed. Dwight's back, which underwent surgery in April, will be an ongoing risk, as will the health of Nash and that of the roster's many other thirtysomethings. Outside shooting remains a real concern even with Nash on board. There's not yet a credible back-up to Kobe Bryant at shooting guard. And somehow Mike Brown has to make this all come together. Integrating Nash, when Kobe has never played with a real point guard, was going to be challenge enough. Dwight's arrival raises the Lakers' ceiling but adds yet another layer of complexity.

Kupchak, meanwhile, is in line for deification. In the face of a new CBA designed to keep big-market teams from stockpiling superstars, he added Nash and Howard at minimal cost. On his watch the Lakers opened up two championship windows: first with the Gasol trade in 2008, and then after that edition of the Lake Show ran its course, he's set the stage for another run of title contention by adding an MVP-caliber big man.

The new season can't start soon enough.

Dwight Howard Won't Sign Contract Extension With Lakers Trade, Will Test Free Agency In 2013

There's a crucial part of this proposed current trade deal that has to be broached. There will be no guaranteed contact extension by Dwight Howard. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the trade that would go through would only ensure Howard would be a Laker through the 2012-13 regular season. After that? Free agency in 2013.

There's a good chance the Lakers are fairly confident they can convince Howard to stick around. After all, unless disastrous things occur, Los Angeles will be a title contender next season, and it'll be hard for Howard to pass up on the allure of playing in such favorable circumstances. It's a logical gamble for Mitch Kupchak to make to try and land the best big man and the largest defensive presence in the NBA.

Of course, this is Dwight Howard we're talking about, the man who makes Hamlet look like General Patton. He could very well lean in the other direction if he isn't satisfied with how well he's treated in L.A. The fact that the Dallas Mavericks still loom large for next season makes you think that he's interested in being the main superstar on one team, and that's one thing he'd never be on a Laker team with Kobe Bryant.

Talk about the Howard contract situation and the potential for free agency with Lakers fans over at Silver Screen and Roll.

Dwight Howard Trade: Pau Gasol Reportedly Staying With Lakers

Patience is said to be a virtue. The Los Angeles Lakers can certainly relate. Eight months after they had their trade for Chris Paul rejected by the NBA, the Lakers are arguably a better team. Their trade for superstar center Dwight Howard is expected to be completed on Friday, and they get to keep Pau Gasol.

Gasol, who was in the rejected deal for Paul and was at times reported to be in a potential deal for Howard per Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, now stays in Los Angeles and will join a very talented starting five.

New point guard Steve Nash addressed the Howard-to-LA rumors last month in a radio interview after he joined the purple and gold.

"(Howard)'s a special player, special talent for sure. I can understand why the Lakers may be recruiting him," Nash said. "But for me to get an opportunity to play with Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, that's amazing. It would be a pleasure to play with those two players."

Bynum is reportedly on his way to Philadelphia in the deal, but Nash will get to play with Gasol and Howard instead. And this Kobe Bryant fellow, who isn't too shabby himself.

Sure it took a season, but the Lakers might be better off because of it. As noted by Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Times.

Dwight Howard Traded To Lakers, Andrew Bynum To 76ers In Reported Four-Way Deal

It seems like it's over. Dwight Howard is on his way to joining Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol in pursuit of a championship. Marc Stein of ESPN has the initial report that details the following parts of this deal.

The good news for the Lakers is that they will only have to part with one of their big men. Pau Gasol does not appear to be included in the deal. This means the Lakers can trout out a lineup of Howard at center, Gasol at power forward, Metta World Peace at small forward, Bryant at shooting guard, and Nash at point guard, with playmakers like Jordan Hill, Devin Ebanks and Steve Blake all likely coming off the bench. This is a championship contending lineup for the Lakers, and they should surge up to become one of the Western Conference favorites.

Andrew Bynum Rumors: Dwight Howard Trade Call Scheduled For Friday

So the wheels are in motion for a complicated four-way trade that would send Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers and Andrew Bynum to the Philadelphia 76ers. One good sign that something is happening is the presence of a scheduled trade call, which is a good sign that something is in line to happen.

Normally teams don't schedule trade calls unless they're ready to get a deal put in place. In this case you'd have to imagine there would be a lot of demand to get the Howard-Bynum deal all wrapped up. However, there are so many variables in play you have to think the situation is too fluid that this thing will be finished by the end of Friday's business hours. There's a long way to go before Howard and Bynum (and maybe Pau Gasol) end up on new basketball teams next season. Many teams will have to agree to certain things that they may not find favorable in the final basketball arithmetic of the deal.

Or it could be over. In which case our long national nightmare will have ended.

Dwight Howard Trade: Lakers, Magic In 4-Team Trade Talks To Send Dwight To L.A., According To Report

OK you guys, it's really might happen this time.

According to a report from Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarwoski the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic are currently involved in talks for a four-team trade with the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers that would send big man Dwight Howard to the Lake Show.

Heard this before? Ya, me too.

Here's Woj with some details:

A deal is not considered imminent, but the talks have grown serious over the course of this week, sources said.

There are multiple moving parts in the fluid talks, but the framework of a possible deal includes Howard and Denver forward Al Harrington going to the Lakers, Philadelphia guard Andre Iguodala going to the Nuggets, Los Angeles center Andrew Bynum moving to the 76ers, and Los Angeles forward Pau Gasol and Denver guard Arron Affalo going to the Magic, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The proposed deal includes the Magic also gaining draft picks and salary-cap relief, sources said.

Whoa. 'Moving parts?' 'Fluid talks?' the Lakers sending their entire squad to the four corners of the country? This deal sounds done already!

Sources have told Woj that the Magic would have a decnt chance at trading Gasol in another deal to get more bang for their buck, and eliminate the possibility of Bynum pulling a Dwight Howard and take off as a free agent in 2013.

There certainly will be more from this story to come, but it seems like the ball is rolling on a possible trade. Whether said ball is moving forward or backward is yet to be determined.

For more on this possible blockbuster trade, make sure to check out Silver Screen and Roll.

Lakers Sign Antwan Jamison, Re-Sign Jordan Hill

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to fortify their frontline with more quality signings. It's looking likely that Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum will remain the starting bigs, and now L.A. will be able to get the players they want to do the things they want. Antwan Jamison (one year deal, veteran's minimum) and Jordan Hill (two years, $7 million) will be providing quality help off the bench.

Jamison is on the downside of his career, but he's doing pretty well, averaging 17 points, six rebounds, and two assists per game while shooting 34% from three point range this past season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Although he's down to 40% shooting overall, he does provide another offensive weapon off the bench who can guard forwards and big men.

Hill is also coming off a solid season where he became the primary Laker big off the bench during the playoffs. Hill averaged nearly five points and over six rebounds per game during 12 playoff appearances, and he should continue serving the Lakers well in his role off the bench.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Howard Won't Sign Extension

Apparently in an ongoing effort to make sure his name is in the news at all times, contrary to earlier reports, Dwight Howard's agent is refuting reports that the Orlando Magic center will sign an extension with the Lakers if traded to them.

Agent: Dwight Howard will not sign extension with team that acquires him | SI Tracking Blog – Tracking MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, and NCAA On Twitter

"Dwight's position has remained unchanged since the end of this past season," said Dan Fegan of LaGardere Unlimited. "He fully intends to explore free agency at the end of next season, regardless of what team trades for him, including Brooklyn."

Earlier on Thursday, Howard had said he would be interested in signing an extension with the Lakers, however if he waits until his current deal expires, Howard will be in line for his maximum payoff at a five-year deal worth up to $108 million.

The key centerpiece for the Lakers, if a trade were to happen, would be sending Andrew Bynum away and the Magic want a guarantee that Bynum will sign an extension before they pull the trigger on the trade.

Meanwhile, the agent for Bynum said it would be "foolish" for any team to trade for his client without first gauging Bynum's interest in signing a long-term extension. Bynum is also thought to be holding out for free-agency because he could sign a longer, more lucrative deal.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Andrew Bynum Must Agree To Contract Extension For Deal To Go Forward

Dwight Howard seems like he's come to terms with his restricted mobility and is welcoming a move to the Los Angeles Lakers. Now Andrew Bynum must do the same with the team that's being suggested he will move to, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Orlando Magic appear to be conceding to a full reboot and are ready to start over as a team, which means that to get Howard, the Lakers would probably have to part with their mercurial center. The Cavaliers are ready to be the third team that facilitates this deal ... on one condition. Adrian Wojnarowski reports on what needs to happen.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are eager partners in the three-way blockbuster trade talks to send Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers, but won’t proceed until the Lakers grant the them permission to talk to All-Star Andrew Bynum and his agent about the center’s willingness to sign a contract extension, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

"Cleveland will only do the deal if Bynum extends," a league official directly involved in the talks told Yahoo! Sports.

Los Angeles wants the structure of a three-team deal agreed in principle before letting Cleveland take that next step to communicate with Bynum and his representatives – and that won’t happen until Orlando makes a decision that it wants to also lock-in the framework of a trade, sources told Y!

You have to understand where Cleveland is coming from here, as they're just two years off of losing the best player in NBA history to free agency. They don't want to repeat a similar scenario with Bynum and have Cleveland move back to the rebuilding process.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Magic Superstar Willing To Sign Long-Term Contract Extension With Lakers

Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic made it pretty clear early on in the offseason process that he has one goal: The Brooklyn Nets. But it's looking like Brooklyn has moved on from trying to land him, which leaves only a few potential trade suitors left for Orlando to barter with before making their deal

One of the biggest possibilities was the Los Angeles Lakers, but there seemed to be a huge concern about whether Howard would commit to the team beyond this season, when he will be a free agent in the 2013 offseason. At first it looked as if Howard wouldn't do it, but it's looking like he's starting to renege on that initial condition and might

Chris Broussard of ESPN has filed this report.

If Howard is willing to sign long-term, then one clear impediment to a trade is out of the way. The other impediment is whether Lakers center Andrew Bynum will be willing to do the same for whatever team he ends up getting dealt to. Add in all the bad contracts that might need to be juggled, and this deal is a long way from being over.

NBA Trade Rumors 2012: Andrew Bynum To Cavs, Dwight Howard To Lakers In Proposed Three-Team Deal

There are continued talks between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magic. The Magic want to deal Dwight Howard, the Lakers want to land him. The Lakers would probably have to offload Andrew Bynum, but it's not totally likely that he can end up in Orlando because of contract mismatches and all that jazz. It's likely a third team will have to be involved somehow.

Ric Bucher fills us in on all the latest happenings.

The Cavaliers would land Lakers center Andrew Bynum for a package of draft picks and veteran power forward Anderson Varejao, according to one league source. The Lakers would receive Howard for Bynum. Orlando would get Varejao and draft picks. The source said this was merely the framework of a deal being discussed.

Marc Spears also adds in these details.

A deal did not appear imminent, but conversations between the Lakers and Magic have become more frequent in recent days, sources said. A number of obstacles need to be resolved, including the Lakers' desire for Howard to commit to a long-term extension with them. Howard has warmed to the possibility of joining the Lakers after spending his offseason in Los Angeles, sources said, but remains apprehensive about following in the footsteps of Shaquille O'Neal, who left the Magic for Los Angeles 16 years ago.

The big issue: Will Bynum OR Howard agree to a contract extension with their new teams? All indications are that this won't be the case; neither Bynum nor Howard have shown any indications that they want to give up free agency and the freedom of mobility. This could impede any potential deal in the near future.

Lakers, Antawn Jamison Agree To One-Year Deal

According to a report from Yahoo! Sports NBA insider Marc J. Spears, the Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a deal with veteran big man Antawn Jamison to a one-year deal.

Per Marc J. Spears on Twitter:

Jamison, the 36-year old journeyman played with the Cleveland Cavaliers the last two seasons, averaging 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds a game during the 2011-12 campaign, starting all 65 regular season games for the Cavs. He'll be joining a rebuilding bench mob as well as serve as some back up when, and , or if a deal for Andrew Bynum or Dwight Howard goes down.

The Cavs are seen as a likely third-party to a Dwight Howard deal with the Magic, though it remains unclear whether this deal is related to that at all.

Lakers Report: Team Declines to Exercise Amnesty Clause

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the Los Angeles Lakers declined to use their "amnesty clause" before tonight's deadline.

The amnesty clause is a new part of the current collective bargaining agreement, and it means a team can waive a player who was on their roster last summer without having to pay luxury taxes on the salary. Rumblings around the league believed that if the Lakers were to amnesty anyone it would be Metta World Peace who has two more years on his contract worth $15 million.

If a team amnesties a player they still have to pay the player his salary that was due.

World Peace had one of his worst offensive seasons to date, averaging a career-low 7.7 points a game. On court problems flared up again when the league suspended him seven games for delivering a vicious elbow to the head of Oklahoma City guard James Harden.

Next year, the Lakers will be eligible to use the amnesty provision on Kobe Bryant (owed $30.5 million), Pau Gasol ($19.3 million), World Peace ($7.7 million), and Steve Blake ($4 million) among others.

Andrew Bynum Trade Rumors: Dwight Howard, Lakers Superstar Must Agree To Contract Extensions With New Teams

There are two very big fish left in the NBA trading market in Andrew Bynum of the Los Angeles Lakers and Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic. Howard has the second most impact of any star on a basketball game he's in other than LeBron James, but has proven to be immature in his actions in trying to force his way out of Orlando. Bynum is more offensively gifted than Howard, but struggles to keep his emotional level on an even keel and sometimes finds himself performing well-below the standard that he's capable of playing at.

So now Howard and Bynum are being shopped, and could be involved in a deal of some sort that has the two of them going together. Unfortunately, there are major impediments to a trade happening.

Finding a third team to facilitate the movement of one of the league's best superstars to pair with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Steve Nash is probably a little more difficult than you'd think. But the contract extensions is also a huge albatross. Neither Bynum nor Howard seem ready to commit to a new team beyond the 2013 season, when they both become free agents. So the trade talk moves inexorably on.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Lakers To Meet With Magic About Deal

According to a tweet from Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears, the Lakers are pushing hard to land Magic center Dwight Howard and are meeting with the Magic today.

Spears adds that the Lakers are still looking for a long-term commitment from Howard, which is what has hindered past negotiations between the two teams.

The Lakers have been connected to Howard since the beginning of his trade rumors early last season. The Lakers have the best player available to the Magic in Andrew Bynum but with one year left on his deal, Bynum could put the Magic in the same position they are in now with Howard if he doesn't commit long-term to the team.

The Lakers have already added Steve Nash to the fold and, if they were to pull off a Howard deal, without surrendering Pau Gasol, they could be looking at a top four of Kobe Bryant, Howard, Nash and Gasol. The NBA isn't ready for a juggernaut of that magnitude. Even the Miami Heat would be jealous of a top-four of that caliber.

But as it has been the entire time with Howard talks, nothing is in stone until it's, well, in stone.

Antwan Jamison Rumors: Lakers Have Yet To Offer Free Agent PF

There was a rumor that free agent power forward Antwan Jamison would have been signed by the Los Angeles Lakers. But it hasn't been confirmed quite yet. In fact, it doesn't seem to have quite gotten off the ground yet.

Jamison is still a productive power forward and could be very useful off the bench to back up Pau Gasol and fill in the bigs with Jordan Hill. But there could be some big troubles with the salary cap, as Jamison would probably only be able to be signed for the veteran's minimum. Compared to the production he would put up off the bench, that is probably not financially the best plan for him.

Still, expect Jamison to give the Lakers a chance if he ever gets the ability to talk with him.

Lakers Free Agency Rumors: Jermaine O'Neal Gets Worked Out

The attempt to assemble a mid-2000s NBA All-Star team in the city of Los Angeles is now in full throttle. The Lakers already have Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol on their basketball team with Metta World Peace (2004 All-Star), they signed-and-traded for Steve Nash (the 2006 NBA MVP), and have reportedly managed to land Antwan Jamison too (2005 & 2008)

Now it's Jermaine O'Neal time.

O'Neal will shockingly only be 34 years old by the start of this season, but he hasn't really been productive recently. In his last two years with the Boston Celtics he averaged around 20 minutes a game but only played a combined 49 games (plus nine postseason), averaging five points and three to five rebounds a game. Despite needing big men during their playoff run, O'Neal was cut before the playoffs. Not exactly the man you would trust to really turn it on.

Still, the Lakers could use more big man depth, and O'Neal could play some center and power forward along with Jamison to spell Bynum and Gasol more capably than Jordan Hill all by his lonesome. It's worth a look to see what he's capable of before moving on and trying to find new targets.

Antwan Jamison Rumors: Free Agent PF Reportedly Picks Lakers Over Bobcats

The Los Angeles Lakers have made another veteran signing and picked up power forward Antwan Jamison, according to a report from Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.

The Charlotte Bobcats have lost out on free agent Antawn Jamison, who will sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Observer has learned.

The Bobcats were recruiting free agent Jamison as both a power forward and a veteran mentor to a young team. Jamison was torn between the chance to play for his hometown team or to pursue a championship with what figures to be his last NBA contract.

If this is true, it's a decent signing for filling in Los Angeles's needs.

Jamison is long past his prime at 36 years old, but he still can produce; he managed to play 33 minutes per game and averaged around 17 points, six rebounds and two assists. He also is well-acquainted with Laker head coach Mike Brown, who he played under as a Cleveland Cavalier in his first season in the organization. Jamison provides the Lakers with a quality backup big to help give Pau Gasol more rest, and allow Jordan Hill (if he returns) to provide more energy at the center position.

The Lakers are still in hot pursuit of a small forward to backup Metta World Peace, potentially Grant Hill or Brandon Rush. It'll be an older team regardless, but one that should help Los Angeles contend for a title in the final years of Kobe Bryant's prime.

Lakers Rumors: Grant Hill Liking L.A., Brandon Rush Also Being Pursued

The Los Angeles Lakers have probably already made their biggest offseason splash already with the sign-and-trade deal to get Steve Nash to Tinseltown. Who's next on the agenda?

If I were the Lakers, I'd be looking closely at the small forward situation. Metta World Peace is probably on the downside of his career although still fully capable. While Devin Ebanks has promise, he's probably best served as being the guy who gives Kobe Bryant breaks off the bench. Los Angeles could use someone more established at the position.

In terms of longevity, who's more established than Grant Hill?

It's likely Los Angeles could only sign Hill for a veteran minimum contract. Hill would have to be really dedicated to wanting to win a championship, but then again he's probably one of the most well-paid athletes in NBA history.

Brandon Rush is also getting a bit of interest from Los Angeles, although at this point it looks like it's still in the early stages.

Rush might be a better option in terms of the next decade, but can he help Bryant win now? Despite his athleticism and efficient shooting, Rush is probably going to cost too much compared to Hill.

Lakers Rumors: Lakers, Magic, Cavs Discuss Trade To Bring Dwight Howard To LA, According To Report

The Los Angeles Lakers have been discussing a three way trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Orlando Magic that would bring Dwight Howard to Los Angeles, according to a report from Hoopsworld's Alex Kennedy:

It is unknown at the time who the Lakers might have to part with in order to make a deal with the Cavs. Previous deals discussed have mentioned sending Andrew Bynum to the Houston Rockets, and Kennedy reports that remains an option with Cleveland. Of course, Pau Gasol's name is also always mentioned when the Lakers are looking to make deals. Lakers Free Agency Rumors: Antwan Jamison, Anthony Tolliver Targeted

With the Los Angeles Lakers getting the offseason rolling with the Steve Nash trade, now comes the time to find complementary players to fill in their depth. They could use players particularly at the forward position to help out Metta World Peace and Pau Gasol, particularly if Jordan Hill or Matt Barnes don't return this offseason.

The Lakers are looking at two potential players to fill in their depth. One of them is Antwan Jamison, who could be signed for the veteran's minimum. Jamison could also be traded if he wanted a bigger contract, although he has indicated that he is willing to go to Los Angeles.

Another possibility is Anthony Tolliver, who would also be inked to a minimal contract.

Ramon Sessions Rumors: Bobcats Close To Inking Deal, According To Report

With the arrival of Steve Nash to the Los Angeles Lakers, the writing was on the wall for free agent point guard Ramon Sessions. Luckily he has been finding suitors elsewhere, and according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears, it's the Charlotte Bobcats whom are nearing a deal for Session's talents.

Per Marc J. Spears on Twitter:

Sessions, the fifth year guard out of the University of Nevada, started 19 of the 23 games he saw time in for L.A. last season after a trade from the Cavaliers, improving his marks for minutes (30.5 per game), points (12.7 PPG), and assists (6.5 APG), all new career highs.

Sessions is hoping that his great showing in the second half last year will be that etxra push he needs to get a lucrative deal out of Charlotte.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Orlando Magic Suspend Trade Talks, Lakers In Good Spot

The Dwight Howard trade fiesta rolls on. It looks as if there will be a halt in trade talk for the near future, which could mean if there's any deal for the Orlando Magic center, the discussion will be rolling westward.

With talks suspended, it probably means the Brooklyn Nets won't end up with Howard, as they've previously indicated that they will move on from discussions if nothing productive happens today. Already early reports indicate that the Nets are now focusing on retaining Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries and working together with that team.

This could be a good sign for Lakers and Rockets fans, who have been engaging in talks prior to today's event. Both have been working furiously to come up with the right proposal that should get them Howard. The Lakers have the best tradeable asset in Bynum, but the Magic seem willing to only take on draft picks. Could that three-way deal with Bynum, Howard and draft picks from Houston be revived to get every team the player or assets they desire?

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Andrew Bynum To Rockets, Magic Center To Lakers In Three-Team Deal?

The Dwight Howard drama is reaching its climax. Or is it another mini-climax followed by a dissatisfying resolution? Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld has more on a potential three-team deal that would put Howard in Los Angeles.

HOOPSWORLD has learned that there has been preliminary discussions between the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets that would involve sending Andrew Bynum to the Rockets and Howard to the Lakers.

The Magic are not necessarily in love with the idea of giving either Bynum or Lopez a sizable, long-term commitment as they go through a major roster overhaul. Draft picks and prospects, a la the Denver Nuggets’ return on Carmelo Anthony, is said to be more appealing to Orlando.

Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated adds the following.

With four-team Dwight Howard deal no longer in play, source says Houston is calling teams with cap space looking to dump more salary. The Rockets are still pushing hard to put the best package in front of Orlando, though @EricPincus is reporting the Rockets' target may be the Lakers' Andrew Bynum. Per Pincus, the Magic, Rockets and Lakers have had preliminary talks about a deal that would send Howard to the Lakers, Bynum to Houston and picks/prospects/cap relief to Orlando.

So basically, the Lakers would get Howard, the Rockets would get Bynum, and the Magic would get a bunch of assets back. A strange deal, but one that might potentially work for all three sides. Los Angeles gets its bona fide superstar center and a decent window to compete with Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol for championship. Andrew Bynum becomes a potential building block for the Rockets to develop and grow a team around, and they can try and woo and convince him to come back. And the Magic would have assets from the Rockets they could use to rebuild and restart as a franchise.

The Brooklyn Nets are not giving up on making a two-team deal with the Magic though to get Howard on their team. Don't expect anything to happen until it happens.

Devin Ebanks Re-Signed By Lakers To One-Year Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers have already made a big splash to land Steve Nash. They decided to go a little bit more quiet in their next signing as they moved to retain young Devin Ebanks. Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times files this latest report.

Small forward Devin Ebanks re-signed with the Lakers for a one-year deal worth the team's $1.4-million qualifying offer given 11 days ago, The Times has learned.

...

Ebanks, who will turn 23 in late October, has impressed the Lakers the past two seasons with his unassuming work ethic, length and athleticism. For the Lakers, this move keeps some needed youth on an otherwise veteran-laden team. For Ebanks, it gives him another season to convince the Lakers that he should be in their long-term future.

Most signings can't become official until the free-agent moratorium ends on Wednesday. But Ebanks' case is different since it involves a qualifying offer.

Ebanks averaged four points and two rebounds per game in just over 20 game appearances during the regular season., but those numbers figure to rise this upcoming season. With Matt Barnes not likely to be back, Ebanks could be the first small forward off the bench in spelling Metta World Peace, and could see an uptake in his minutes as one of the few youngsters on a veteran-heavy Laker team.

Ebanks was actually the starter for most of the first round series between the Lakers and the Nuggets when World Peace was suspended and managed to score in double digits three times, so he does have some solid experience under his belt. It probably became part of the calculus in deciding to keep Ebanks around.

Andrew Bynum Trade Rumors: Dwight Howard Switch Looking Unlikely Between Lakers, Magic

With a three-way deal between the Brooklyn Nets, Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers looking all but extinguished, Orlando has turned their eyes to the West to try and deal Dwight Howard. Two prominent teams that have emerged at the forefront are the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers. And the Lakers do seem to have a leg up with the player that can best replace Howard in Andrew Bynum

The Rockets might be a better candidate because there are too many issues with the picks the Lakers have left, and what Bynum would want to do after 2013, when his contract runs out. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports files this latest report.

The Rockets could be the most intriguing possibility for the Magic because they can satisfy Orlando general manager Rob Hennigan’s desire to get multiple draft picks and unload significant salary off his payroll. The Lakers have the one player, Andrew Bynum, that Hennigan covets, but Bynum hasn't committed to accepting an extension in Orlando, nor do the Lakers have the salary-cap space or ready access to draft picks.

The Magic really want to get assets other than Bynum in a deal because they know that they're downgrading from the best center in the league to the second best, and thus deserve to collect more in the trade. Unfortunately, with the Lakers already having sent a couple of picks to get Steve Nash, it has reduced the arsenal in terms of players and picks another team might want.

Discuss Howard and Bynum with Magic fans at Orlando Pinstriped Post, and talk about them with Lakers fans at Silver Screen and Roll.

Lakers Offseason: Quin Snyder Joins Ettore Messina At CSKA Moscow

The Los Angeles Lakers just can't worry about refurbishing their player personnel. Their coaching staff will now have some big holes to fill. The high-profiled European coach Ettore Messina is on his way to CSKA Moscow, and he's bringing one of the best assistants of the Lakers in Quin Snyder with him. Snyder had been under consideration for NBA jobs, but he eventually ended up back in Los Angeles. Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times files this report.

Snyder, 45, drew interest from two NBA teams this off-season and was a finalist for the head coaching job in Charlotte. He was also being considered for the Orlando Magic vacancy.

He became a favorite of Lakers players, earning their trust with his low-key, but effective, demeanor.

Brown will now have to find a new assistant coach, although it shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement. Everyone is always interested in being coached by the Lakers.

CSKA Moscow is one of the top teams in Europe and finished as the runners-up in the EuroLeague championship last season.

Lakers Free Agency Rumors: Raja Bell Could Be Pursued

The Los Angeles Lakers will probably need to find more veterans to put around Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant. How about an old teammate of one and an old nemesis of another?

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports fields this report on the Utah Jazz and Raja Bell parting ways, and how Los Angeles might be interested in picking him up.

Bell would provide the Lakers with a backup shooting guard. He would give them another solid perimeter defender and also someone who can shoot three pointers to stretch the floor when the Laker starters are on the bench.

It remains to be seen if Bell would be satisfied with a limited role, since Bryant figures to play most of his time as a shooting guard and Bell will spend most of his time on the bench. Also, Bell has gone this route with Los Angeles before, flirting with the Lakers in his last free agent period before signing with Utah.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Lakers Confident Magic Center Would Re-sign If Dealt To Los Angeles

With Steve Nash joining up with Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers seem poised for a few more runs at a championship. Landing Dwight Howard could secure L.A.'s future for quite some time, but there continue to be major concerns about whether the superstar will stay with the Lakers beyond the 2013 season. Howard has repeatedly stated that he is unlikely to stick around.

The Lakers appear optimistic that they convince Howard to stick around though. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports files this report.

The big concerns might be about convincing the Orlando Magic that Andrew Bynum would stick around and agree to a contract extension with them, something that he appears to be unwilling to do.

Andrew Bynum Rumors: Lakers Big Favors Mavericks, Cavs In Free Agency, Unwilling To Sign Extension With Magic

The Los Angeles Lakers could be caught in a big man exchange this offseason, but there could be a huge hold-up. The big thing keeping any deals from happening? The lack of willingness by either side to sign a contract extension with their proposed new teams.

Howard appears to be adamant that he wants to end up with the Brooklyn Nets, and seems to be not all that keen on sticking with the Lakers. A similar situation appears to exist with Bynum and Orlando. Bynum is a free agent in 2013, and he already has a list of potential teams he'd be interested in if he ends up getting dealt from Los Angeles.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports has filed this report.

Without an extension with Lakers, Andrew Bynum has a short list of teams he will consider in 2013 free agency, league sources tell Y!

Bynum has shown no inclination to agree to an immediate extension if sent to Orlando as part of a Dwight Howard package, sources tell Y!

Dallas and Cleveland are among teams with cap space that would interest Bynum in 2013 as a free agent, sources tell Y!

If Magic and Lakers want to do a deal, each may need to call the bluff on Howard and Bynum stated unwillingness to accept extensions.

So Orlando's unwillingness to deal for Bynum is probably similar to Los Angeles's reluctance to deal for Howard. They'll have to know whether the other player is willing to sign to any arrangement before they're willing to go forward with any deal.

Talk about Bynum with Lakers fans at Silver Screen and Roll, and with Magic fans at Orlando Pinstriped Post.

Kobe Bryant Talks Dwight Howard, Steve Nash And 2012 Expectations

Kobe Bryant remains the face of the Los Angeles Lakers despite their many moves in recent years to both acquire and send off All-Stars, and he'll continue to embrace this role until he retires. Following a wild week for news that included Steve Nash coming to the Lakers and Dwight Howard rumors going left and right as always, Bryant went on SportsCenter and discussed a wide range of topics.

The first thing Bryant talked about was Howard and what he hopes happens for the big man.

He then talked about Steve Nash and his expectations next year:

Finally, are the Lakers done making moves this offseason?

It'll be an interesting season in L.A. to say the very least.

Ramon Sessions Rumors: Dallas Mavericks Extend Starting Job Offer To Former Lakers PG

The Dallas Mavericks need a point guard now that their starter is headed elsewhere. I'm guessing Ramon Sessions fits the bill. Jeff Caplan of ESPN Dallas has this report.

A source close to the situation said the Mavs initially contacted Sessions' representatives prior to Kidd opting to pass on a three-year, $9 million offer from Dallas and instead agreeing to a similar deal to join the New York Knicks.

After Kidd reached his decision to move on, the Mavs again reached out to Sessions, the 26-year-old point guard that was traded from Cleveland to the Lakers at the trade deadline last season. Sessions, the source said, is seeking a starting job and security.

The source said another round of talks with the Mavs are set for Friday.

It's been a rough summer for both the Mavericks and Sessions. Dallas has lost Jason Terry to Boston and Jason Kidd to New York. They couldn't entice Deron Williams to head down to Texas and they couldn't land Steve Nash either. They're looking perilously close to striking out on any of the major players and might have to settle on their backup plans, like Sessions, who is definitely a backup plan.

Meanwhile Sessions has lost his potential starting spot with the Lakers with the trade that brought Steve Nash to Los Angeles. If he's not willing to return in a backup role, Sessions will now have to try and find a new basketball team that will allow him the chance to start, and Dallas might just be that spot.

NBA Trade Rumors: Dwight Howard Could Be Enticed By Steve Nash Joining Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers added yet another veteran star to their roster on Wednesday with the surprising acquisition of Steve Nash from the Suns, and now all eyes have shifted to Orlando where the Dwight Howard saga never ends. The Lakers have seemingly been interested in Howard for years now and his defensive presence would be huge for the team, but there would be some complications with bringing D12 to L.A.

Adrian Wojnarowski takes a deeper look into the situation in his latest column.

Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash connected on the phone Monday night, discussing the parameters of a partnership that would've once seemed so improbable. Nash had the vision of joining the Los Angeles Lakers, and Bryant told him he wanted him there. This had come together so fast, so out of nowhere, Bryant is still calculating the possibilities of pairing two of a generation's best talents and basketball minds.

This is the kind of cordial recruiting call that Bryant and Dwight Howard haven't had, a silence existing for most of a year now. Bryant will not recruit Howard to reaffirm the Lakers as part of Howard's list of teams that he's willing to accept a trade and sign a long-term extension. For several reasons - including Bryant's respect for teammate Andrew Bynum - the odds of Bryant picking up the phone and calling are remote. Bryant would welcome Howard as a teammate, sources say, but he's shown no inclination to be part of a process of trying to convince him to come.

Unlike the Nash situation where Kobe had no concerns over offending one of his current teammates, dealing Andrew Bynum for someone who requires as much attention as Howard does could become an issue. The Lakers have had their fair share of drama over the years, and the last thing Bryant wants as his career winds down is to have a bunch of issues with the team in the locker room.

The Howard to L.A. rumors will likely continue throughout the offseason, but it's tough to see the two sides matching up. As is always the case with the NBA though, anything is possible.

Steve Nash Surprised, Excited To Join Lakers

The newest member of the Los Angeles Lakers, point guard Steve Nash, had his first radio interview since joining the Lakers on ESPN Radio 710 on Thursday morning. Nash played the last eight seasons for the Suns, and said a week and a half ago the rivalry with the Lakers still burned bright.

"It was a surprise, for sure. About 10 days ago, I said it would be hard for me to put on a Laker uniform," Nash said. "Being able to be a Laker after being a Sun, after trying to beat the Lakers in the playoffs all those years, the reality was it was too good an opportunity to pass up as far as my children were concerned. Fortunately for me, it's a great basketball situation."

Nash called the chance to be close to his son and two daughters his top priority, which made the Lakers a more attractive option than New York or Toronto.

Kobe Bryant and Nash spoke last week, during Bryant's basketball camp in Santa Barbara. Nash relished the chance to play with Kobe.

"For me it was important to speak to him just to make sure he was completely on board. He could visualize this as being an effective fit and being excited about it," said Nash. "I spoke to him and spoke to coach Brown and they were excited. Kobe was great, he was excited."

Nash said the addition of the pick-and-roll to the Lakers offense will be great for the spacing, and that he and Bryant could be leaders.

"He felt we were complimentary leaders. I'm more on the positive side, he's more someone who will crack the whip,." Nash said, laughing.

But what about Bryant's penchant for dominating the ball?

"Kobe's still one of the all-time great players in this game. I hope he does have the ball in his hands a lot," Nash said. "At the same time I think it does take pressure off him as someone else who can handle the ball and can get him the ball in spots and get him some easy baskets."

The Lakers have been still rumored to be interested in Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, but Nash likes the pair of big men currently in purple and gold.

"He's a special player, special talent for sure. I can understand why the Lakers may be recruiting him," Nash said. "But for me to get an opportunity to play with Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, that's amazing. It would be a pleasure to play with those two players."

Nash seems to be already making the right calls and saying the right things.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Will Steve Nash Deal Make Magic Center Reconsider Contract Extension With Lakers?

Remember a long time ago at the beginning of this whole Dwight Howard saga when he started to call out asking for trades? This was one particular demand that he asked out of the Orlando Magic front office.

It never really materialized, and eventually Howard started asking for trades, and now it looks as if that situation has long since disintegrated. Now, suddenly, that little piece of information could be the key to ensuring that Howard would agree to a contract extension if he gets dealt to the Lakers.

If Howard wanted Nash as a prerequisite to agreeing to stay in Orlando, then how would it be any different for coming to Los Angeles? A point guard who has distributed the basketball fairly strongly in his career could be a marked improvement over the center hoping the usage-heavy Kobe Bryant gets him the basketball at some point during the game.

Could the Nash trade force the Lakers and Magic to commit to the Andrew Bynum for Dwight Howard deal that's been dangling out there for months? It'll all depend on how willing Howard is to take on Los Angeles as the second fiddle to Bryant offensively, a role he has seemed disinclined to taking on as he approaches his natural basketball prime.

Lakers Trade Rumors: Andrew Bynum And Pau Gasol Safe With Steve Nash A Laker?

The Los Angeles Lakers have been shopping their big men a bit this offseason. Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum really struggled to work well with each other last season, and there's a great question about whether those two can coexist as one ages and the other develops into his body. It might be necessary for them to part to both thrive on the basketball court as players; hence the onslaught of trade rumors for both players.

Could that all be over now that they've put Steve Nash on their basketball team?

It'd be surprising if the Lakers totally ratcheted down their efforts to position more stars around Nash and Bryant. Dwight Howard still figures to be bandied about as a name the Lakers could use. Los Angeles could afford more athleticism and consistent shooting at the small forward spot. There are needs that could be filled for the Lakers via a Gasol or Bynum deal.

Still, there is some logic at going forward with this core 4 into the 2012 season and see what they can come up with on the floor. Los Angeles will be very formidable as a unit and will be worth watching most of the season. Gasol should thrive with Nash. Bynum should get more post touches. Might as well roll with the situation.

Steve Nash Thanks Phoenix Suns For Trading Him To Lakers

It's clear that Steve Nash's decision to get the organization to trade him from the Phoenix Suns to their hated buddies in the Western Conference probably won't be a popular decision in Arizona anytime soon. It makes sense that he'd come out and issue a statement soon after the trade went down to try and explain the rationale for making this move.

For the last 8 seasons I've been blessed to play for a team and a city that has embraced me and that I have come to call home. This is a tough business and the only thing constant in life is change.

After talking with (owner) Robert (Sarver) and (president of basketball operations) Lon (Babby) we've agreed that it's time for both of us to move in new directions. I approached them and asked if they would be willing to do a sign and trade deal with L.A. because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family.

They were very apprehensive and didn't want to do it. Fortunately for me, they reconsidered. They saw that they were able to get assets for their team that will make them better, assets they would not have otherwise had and it made sense for them to do a deal that helps their team get better.

I couldn't be more grateful to the organization and Robert in particular. I know how hard this was for him and that fact that he was able to help me and my family in this way ... it means a lot and says a lot about his character. I will never forget this gesture. Above and beyond.

The Phoenix Suns are an amazing organization and fans should be excited about their future. I hope the Suns win a championship some day soon for all the amazing fans and wonderful people in the organization.

It'll be interesting to see the reaction from Suns fans about Nash trying to win a title from Los Angeles. I'm guessing there will be a lot of anger and irritation at the onset, but then there will be some appreciation for all that Nash has given the franchise, and eventually a level of acceptance at realizing Nash spent the bulk of his career in Phoenix and nearly took them to a few Western Conference championships. It might be hard for Suns fans to accept Nash in a Laker jersey though.

Lakers Free Agency Rumors: Grant Hill Will Join Steve Nash Or Retire

The Los Angeles Lakers will now look to add parts around Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash and whoever stays among the Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum big man duo. You have to figure another veteran would help out in a locker room on the older side.

One possibility is Nash's teammate Grant Hill, who as a free agent has previously indicated he'd be strongly inclined to join up with his former teammate. It look as if it'll be the only team he deliberates over this offseason, or otherwise he'll just hang it up.

It's not likely that Hill will make much money in Los Angeles. The Lakers are pretty much set with regards to their cap space, and Hill would probably have to sign for the veteran's minimum. That being said, he's one of the best-paid players in NBA history, so he's hardly strapped for cash.

Steve Nash To Lakers: Nash Reportedly Pressing For Grant Hill To Join Him In Los Angeles

The Lakers have acquired the services of Steve Nash in a sign-and-trade deal with the Phoenix Suns, giving up four draft picks in exchange for the veteran point guard. Nash isn't wasting any time, as reports quickly surfaced that Nash was pushing for long-time teammate Grant Hill to join him in Los Angeles. As ESPN.com reported:

Sources told ESPN.com that Nash will try to convince longtime teammate Grant Hill, one of his closest friends in the game, to join him with the Lakers. ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reported over the weekend the Lakers were one of four teams (along with Toronto, New York and Phoenix) in the running for Hill after the 39-year-old's recent trip to Germany to undergo the same platelet-enrichment treatment on his knee that Bryant credited for his rejuvenated knee last season.

Hill's condition following that treatment is unknown, but his 2011-2012 season was a clear step down from career averages. Hill saw action in 49 games in the 2011-2012 season, averaging 10.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game versus career averages of 17.1 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Steve Nash To Lakers: Reaction To Trade Depends On Perspective

The Los Angeles Lakers provided the fireworks on this July 4, as they are on the verge of acquiring Steve Nash from the Phoenix Suns for four draft picks in a sign-and-trade deal for the free agent point guard. Reaction to the deal has varied depending on the perspective.

Jared Dudley, who was a teammate of Nash in Phoenix for four years, had nothing but praise for the two-time MVP. "Steve Nash has not only been a the Best but the most unselfish player I ever played with. I only wish him the Best. He's deserves everything," Dudley said in a tweet on Wednesday. "(Nash) as made many players millions.Only fitting to trade to a team that has a chance to win the ship and pay what he deserves."

Ric Bucher of ESPN noted, "So dealing Lamar Odom to Dallas for zilch finally pays off, since it's his trade exception, presumably, used to take in Nash," taking some of the sting out of last offseason's bizarre move.

Alex Kennedy of Hoops World tweeted, "Steve Nash chose the Los Angeles Lakers over the New York Knicks, according to source. Kobe Bryant recruited him."

As SB Nation Arizona pointed out, the end of the Nash era in Phoenix to the longtime rival Lakers was too bitter a pill to swallow: "Ugliest ending to a great marriage."

Ben Rosales of Lakers blog Silver Screen and Roll noted, "So, Jim Buss has now traded for Chris Paul AND Steve Nash? Can we safely say that he deserves a LOT more praise now?"

Steve Nash Rumors: Nash To Lakers In Exchange For Draft Picks Now Confirmed

The Steve Nash to Los Angeles Lakers trade reported earlier has been confirmed, according to multiple reports. Both ESPN and CBS Sports confirm the deal. In exchange for Nash the Phoenix Suns will receive four draft picks, according to Paul Coro. The Suns will receive the Lakers' 2013 and 2015 first-round picks and their 2013 and 2014 second-round picks.

With a sign-and-trade agreement Phoenix gets something in return for Nash, and the Lakers can use their $8.9 million trade exception to make an offer the CBA would otherwise prohibit. The Lakers are already well over the luxury tax, and that exception appears to be key in the offer made to Nash, reported to be a three year, $25 million deal.

Their needs at point guard were one of the most pressing off season issues for the Lakers. A veteran point guard with talent in both shooting and in setting up plays appears to be just what the team needed to avoid another early exit from the playoffs.

Steve Nash Rumors: Nash To Lakers Deal 'Done' According To Report

A deal to send Steve Nash to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for draft picks is "all but done," according to a report from John Gambadoro of KTAR Phoenix:

He later added:

The deal is suspected to include at least two first rounders, also according to Gambadoro. Rumors have been swirling around the veteran pointguard, with the Toronto Raptors being quote vocal about their interest in Nash. The rumored deal would be beneficial for both the Suns and the Lakers. By signing Nash and then trading him, the Suns gain value in return for his departure rather than simply losing him in free agency. The Lakers, already well over the luxury tax, would be unable to afford Nash on the open market, but a deal with Phoenix would allow them to use their $8.9 million exception to make a competitive offer.

Nash would be of substantial benefit to the Lakers, whose lack of depth at point guard contributed to their early exit from the 2012 NBA Playoffs. A veteran who can move the ball around as well as shoot would certainly be a big step up for the team.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Lakers Have Concerns About Magic Superstar

The Los Angeles Lakers have been shown to be willing about the possibility of dealing for Dwight Howard. The Magic center wants out of Orlando, and Los Angeles has probably the best bargaining chip out there in Andrew Bynum. If any close-to-even exchange could be made for Howard, the Lakers would be the team that could pull it off.

However, even though Howard is in contention for being the second-best player in the NBA, the Lakers aren't close to being assured that the Magic center will be a good exchange for Bynum. Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times has filed this report that expresses multiple concerns about Howard regarding his health, his inability to sign a contract extension, and the additional salaries they might have to take on if a Howard trade occurs.

But the Lakers have a growing list of concerns about Howard if they are to trade Andrew Bynum for him, according to a person with knowledge of the team's thinking.

How's that bulging disk in Howard's back, the one that required surgery and forced him to miss the playoffs?

Would Howard sign a contract extension after indicating privately he does not want to play for the Lakers? They're reluctant to accept a trade for him without getting more years tacked on to the one he has left for $19.5 million.

The Lakers currently have no desire to take back additional salary in a trade for Howard. The Magic wants any trade partner to absorb small forward Hedo Turkoglu (two more years, $23.8 million) or shooting guard Jason Richardson (three more years, $18.6 million). Turkoglu is 33 years old. Richardson is 31.

Lakers Trade Rumors: Suns Block Steve Nash Sign-And-Trade, According To Report

With the news that the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns are ramping up their talks for a possible sign-and-trade deal for free agent point guard Steve Nash, other teams are trying their best to get ahold of the perennial All-Star, including the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lake Show was pursuing a possible sign-and-trade deal of their own for Nash, but apparently the Suns wanted nothing of sending him to a Western Conference rival, especially the Purple and Gold.

Per ESPN's Marc Stein via Twitter:

Nash is said to favor playing in New York, though other squads like the Mavericks and Raptors are said to be vying for his services still as well.

Lakers Trade Rumors: Steve Nash Reportedly A Candidate For Sign-And-Trade Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are the latest team to be linked to free agent point guard Steve Nash, who has drawn interest from just about everyone this offseason. Nash, 38, is on the final legs of a tremendous career, and now he's looking to join a contender capable of winning a championship.

Here is the latest on the Nash rumors.

It's tough to imagine the Suns agreeing to a deal that would send Nash to a division rival, but anything is possible I suppose. The Lakers would immediately become an offensive juggernaut with the future Hall of Famer running the show, although his defense and health would be concerns in the coming years.

This doesn't really seem like a great fit, but it'll definitely be a story to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

2012 NBA Free Agency: Devin Ebanks' List Of Suitors Grows

Los Angeles Lakers restricted free agent forward Devin Ebanks seems to have acquired quite the list of suitors. Even though the Lakers are able to match any offer that comes Ebanks' way, if the money is right and it doesn't fit into the Lakers' plans, Ebanks could be off to continue his young career elsewhere.

According to Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld.com, the teams interested in Ebanks are the Orlando Magic, Oklahoma City Thunder, Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers.

Ebanks will be entering his third season in the league and averaged 16.5 minutes per game last season as a multi-dimensional wing defender and occasional three-point shooter. In the right situation, with the right amount of playing time, Ebanks is very Trevor Ariza-esque in his skill-set and demeanor.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Magic Make Lakers' Andrew Bynum Top Target, According To Yahoo! Sports

According to Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski, the Orlando Magic are pursuing the Los Angeles Lakers' Andrew Bynum as their top target in any Dwight Howard trade talks.

If it feels like back at square one, it should. Last summer, during Dwight Howard's first dive into the world of wishy-washy future decisions, it looked like Howard would be traded to the Lakers for Bynum. It didn't happen, but even as Howard continues to try to claim that he will only sign an extension with one team (presumably the Brooklyn Nets), it would make plenty of sense for him to change his mind (sense a trend?) and decide to stick with the Lakers long-term.

What's not to like? If Pau Gasol stays, you end up with a top three of Howard, Gasol and Kobe Bryant. That core would challenge the Oklahoma City Thunder for West supremacy next season, even if there are reports of a slight rift in Bryant and Howard's relationship.

Also, according to Woj, Howard's next Adidas deal could be worth double the current money he receives from them if he plays in a major market such as Los Angeles or New York.

The lack of attractive assets offered by the Nets and Houston Rockets have given the Magic pause about engaging them in trade discussions.

But hold tight on whether or not the deal goes down. It's only a Tuesday.

Pau Gasol Trade Rumors: Minnesota Timberwolves Aim For Lakers PF

Pau Gasol will be involved in a multitude of trade rumors this offseason until he's traded. Gasol just doesn't seem to fit what Los Angeles needs, and the Lakers need to find more players that fill their roles better.

Gasol and the Minnesota Timberwolves have long been rumored a popular match. Gasol and Kevin Love would be a powerful force in the middle, Gasol should team up well with his Spanish buddy Ricky Rubio, and the Timberwolves have the assets that Los Angeles would want to make this deal work. Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune has this report.

The Wolves remain interested in acquiring veteran Lakers forward Pau Gasol and also have had free-agent discussions with guards Jamal Crawford, Lou Williams and Alexey Shved.

Would Los Angeles would be willing to deal away a prospect like Derrick Williams to land Gasol? Time will tell.

Jordan Hill also visited Minnesota. Not quite as big a deal though.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Lakers, Hawks, Nets In The Mix

The Dwight Howard race continues. With Howard wanting out of Orlando, there's a long list of teams looking to lock him up. Who will claim him?

Three teams seem to be on top of the race when it comes to discussing a deal for Howard. There's the team he wants to go to (the Brooklyn Nets), the team he probably doesn't want to be with but would end up learning to deal with it (the Los Angeles Lakers), and the team that he'd probably end up leaving after a year-long rental.

Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated has more on the situation.

A source close to the situation confirmed reports that Howard requested a trade yet again Friday, telling new Magic general manager Rob Hennigan that he wanted out during a meeting in Los Angeles. The source said the Magic are open for business on trade calls now, and various reports indicate that talks are heating up with the Hawks, Lakers and Nets.

Almost any trade with the Lakers would have to involve their own prized center Andrew Bynum. Is it a deal the Lakers are willing to make?

Lakers Free Agent Rumors: Nick Young, Brandon Rush, Lou Amundson Targeted

The Los Angeles Lakers have some needs to clear up going into next season, and one of them is fixing things on the perimeter. L.A. doesn't have enough strength outside to complement Kobe Bryant, who was often left trying to bail his teammates on the outside when the paint was packed against Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

So it makes sense for Los Angeles to try and target top wing talent as well as another big man. Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times files this report which has the Lakers targeting Nick Young and Brandon Rush, two quality shooters.

Additionally, the Lakers are pursuing Lou Amundson. If the Lakers don't hang onto either Jordan Hill (or even if they do get him), getting a utility big like Amundson to back up Bynum would really help keep Los Angeles's front court depth going strong into the near future.

NBA Trade Rumors: Lakers, Hawks Cannot Agree On Deal Involving Josh Smith, Pau Gasol

The Los Angeles Lakers have made it no secret that they'd be willing to deal veteran big man Pau Gasol in the right deal. The Atlanta Hawks have made very little efforts to conceal they would be willing to trade forward Josh Smith if the right offer came on the table. It appears the Lakers and Hawks would be solid trade partners, but that may not be the case.

Here is the latest from the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

In addition to (Joe) Johnson, the Hawks have been open to moving forward Josh Smith though they've resisted offers so far. Apparently the Hawks balked at a potential deal with the Lakers for Pau Gasol because L.A. wanted another major piece to go along with Smith. That would leave the Hawks with less than six players under contract, less talent, and no short-term cap relief because of the $38 million and two years remaining on Gasol's contract.

This news comes as a big surprise if true. Yes, Smith has his issues on the court, but Gasol isn't getting any younger. For the Lakers to insist on yet another impact piece along with Smith is odd, if not foolish. Gasol is expensive and does not have a ton of trade value, and he's on a steep decline at this point in his career.

There's always a chance the Lakers and Hawks begin negotiating yet again, but it looks like L.A. will have to lower their asking price if they hope to land Smith anytime soon.

NBA Trade Rumors: Lakers, Magic Discussing Dwight Howard Deal

Stop me if you've heard this one before: the Lakers and Magic are reportedly discussing a deal that would send Dwight Howard to Los Angeles. The news comes a few hours after free agency in the NBA officially began, which is always an insane time of year for teams all around the league.

The Lakers don't have a ton of cash to spend on free agents thanks to the new CBA, but they do have some potentially attractive trade pieces. Here is the latest from the always reliable Adrian Wojnarowski:

Orlando officials are willing to discuss trades for Howard, and the Lakers have been one of the teams in touch with them over the weekend, sources said. The Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets have also talked to Magic officials, sources said.

While the Lakers have yet to make a direct offer, there's no scenario where Orlando would move Howard to the Lakers without getting back Andrew Bynum, L.A.'s 24-year-old All-Star center. Pau Gasol wouldn't fit the Magic's desires to rebuild with young players and draft picks.

The Lakers had been willing to part with Bynum for Howard in March, but those talks ended when Howard decided to decline his early termination option and remain under contract through the 2012-13 season.

There's no denying that Howard is an incredibly talented (and still relatively young) player, but do the Lakers really need more drama on their roster? For all of the demands he has made in Orlando, what's to say he'll be a good teammate in Los Angeles? And is this all worth dealing Andrew Bynum, who is still developing and just 24 years old?

These are some tough questions, and ones the Lakers will have to face in the coming days as the trade rumors only begin to swirl even more.
