Lakers Get Mauled By Bobcats, 109-89

Boy, that road trip sure got less fun in a hurry, didn't it? One day after scoring their fewest points of the season in a loss in Orlando, the Los Angeles Lakers suffered their worst loss of the season, falling 109-89 to their nemesis, the Charlotte Bobcats, at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Lakers have lost to the Bobcats in eight of their last 10 meetings, and have lost five of their last six games in Charlotte.

The Lakers were down 49-43 at halftime, but got blitzed in the third quarter. Charlotte outscored the Lakers 29-17, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Gerald Wallace to end the quarter. Wallace led Charlotte with 20 points. Kobe Bryant missed shootaround this morning with aches and chills, but still started tonight's game, as expected. Kobe led the Lakers in scoring with 20 points, but made just eight of 20 field goals. The Lakers made just three of 18 from three-point range.

Pau Gasol had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who fell to 19-10 on the road this season. Andrew Bynum was a non-factor, with nine points and six rebounds in 23 minutes. The Lakers' previous worst losses of the season were a pair of 19-point defeats at home, on December 21 against Milwaukee and on January 2 against Memphis. The Lakers have one more game before the All-Star break, on Wednesday night in Cleveland against the Cavaliers.

Lakers Vs. Bobcats: Kobe Bryant Will Play Tonight In Charlotte

The Los Angeles Lakers received some good, if not expected, news this afternoon in Charlotte, as Kobe Bryant will in fact play against the Bobcats tonight. Kobe missed shootaround this morning with "chills and aches," according to Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times. Bryant has started every game this season.

For the Bobcats, D.J. Augustin has a sore left wrist, but he will in fact start at point guard tonight, per Mike Cranston of the Associated Press. In addition, Boris Diaw will not start tonight because he overslept and missed shootaround this morning, but is expected to play in the game. Eduardo Najera will start in Diaw's place at power forward.

Here are tonight's starting lineups:

Lakers (38-17)

Bobcats (23-31)

The Lakers have lost seven of their last nine games against the Bobcats, including four of their last five in Charlotte.

Lakers Vs. Bobcats: "Under The Weather" Kobe Bryant A Game-Time Decision

The Los Angeles Lakers will look for their fifth win in six games on the current road trip tonight, but they may be facing the Charlotte Bobcats without their best player. Kobe Bryant is feeling sick today, and skipped morning shootaround in Charlotte this morning, according to a series of tweets from beat writer Mike Trudell of NBA.com:

Kobe Bryant missed today's with "aches" and "chills," acc. to the LAL staff.

Phil Jackson said he'd have to wait & see how Kobe feels prior to the game at Charlotte before determining Bryant's status.

Bryant, as Trudell also noted, usually plays through such things, but the concern is there at least. That Jackson called it a game-time decision at least casts some doubt on his status for tonight. If I were a betting man -- and I am -- I would bet Kobe plays tonight against the Bobcats, who have beaten the Lakers in seven of their last nine meetings.

In Bobcats news, they may be without point guard D.J. Augustin tonight, who is a game-time decision with a sprained left wrist, according to Mike Cranston of the Associated Press. Head coach Paul Silas told Cranston that Augustin won't play. In addition, Boris Diaw missed morning shootaround this morning because he overslept. That's never a good sign for an old school coach like Silas, who said Eduardo Najera will start in place of Diaw, also per Cranston.

Lakers Vs. Bobcats: Andrew Bynum (Knee) Expected To Start

The Los Angeles Lakers look for their fifth win in six games tonight against the Charlotte Bobcats at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte. The Lakers held their collective breath Sunday against Orlando, when center Andrew Bynum bumped knees with Dwight Howard of the Magic with about nine minutes remaining in the game. It was Bynum's left knee, the same knee in which Bynum had a bone bruise which caused him to miss a game against the Rockets 13 days ago. However, Bynum showed no ill effects after the game, per Mike Trudell of NBA.com:

Jackson said that Bynum is OK. He banged knees in that 4th Q but apparently is fine.

More Trudell:

Bynum told me his knee was fine, just banged it in that 4th Q. He'll start tomorrow at Charlotte.

Here are tonight's probable starting lineups:

Lakers (38-17)

Bobcats (23-31)

Lakers Continue Road Trip In Charlotte Against Nemesis Bobcats

The Los Angeles Lakers got their first taste of defeat on this road trip on Sunday afternoon in Orlando, but look to get back on track tonight in Charlotte as they face the Bobcats. After opening their seven-game road trip with four straight wins, the Lakers lost 89-75 to the Magic on Sunday in their worst offensive output of the season. Now they face a Bobcats team that has given them trouble in the last few years.

The Lakers have lost four of their last five games in Charlotte, and have lost seven of their last nine to the Bobcats overall. Charlotte, who made the playoffs last season under coach Larry Brown, started 9-19 this season before Brown resigned on December 22. Paul Silas took over as coach, and the Bobcats are 14-12 since the coaching change, including wins over Atlanta, Chicago (twice), and Boston.

Stephen Jackson leads Charlotte in scoring, averaging 19.2 points per game. Under coach Silas, Jackson is averaging 21.3 points per contest, compared to 17.3 points per game under Brown. Jackson hit a buzzer beater on Saturday to defeat the Hawks in Atlanta.

Andrew Bynum, who scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds against Orlando on Sunday, banged knees in the fourth quarter and was seen limping on the court. However, after the game both Bynum and head coach Phil Jackson said Bynum's knee was fine and that he would start tonight in Charlotte, per Mike Trudell of NBA.com.

The Lakers are 19-9 on the road this season. San Antonio, at 20-7, is the only NBA team with 20 road wins this season. After tonight, the Lakers have one more game before the All-Star break, on Wednesday in Cleveland against the Cavaliers.
