Jonathan Quick is going on a rehab stint, whether or not there will be games to come back to once he's rehabbed.
Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick, last year's Conn Smythe Trophy winner, will play for the Manchester Monarchs in the American Hockey League to build toward a game-ready status as he recovers from offseason back surgery.
The Monarchs — located in Manchester, N.H. — are considered to be the top team in the Kings' minor-league system.
Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times said transactions are generally forbidden during a lockout, but Quick's injury was related to hockey and occurred before the league locked out players on Sept. 15.
Kings general manager Dean Lombardi said he was unsure if Quick's rehab stint with the Monarchs would be limited to a certain number of games, Elliott reported.
Quick won the Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, after posting a .946 save percentage and three shutouts as the Kings won the team's first-ever Stanley Cup. Quick agreed to a 10-year contract extension with the Kings shortly after last season concluded.
