The Los Angeles Kings fell to the Calgary Flames 2-1 in a shootout on Thursday night at Staples Center. Jack Johnson appeared to have scored on the second round of the shooutout, but upon replay it was determined that he scored off his own rebound, so the shootout goal was disallowed, giving Calgary a 2-1 advantage. Mike Richards was stopped as the third shooter, ending the game.
The Kings had a power play for the last 34 seconds of overtime thanks to a hooking call on Mark Giordano of the Flames. The Kings got three shots off in those final 34 seconds, but none found the net, which led to the shootout.
Jonathan Quick saved 24 of 25 shots for the Kings in defeat. Miikka Kiprusoff saved 31 of 32 shots for the Flames. The Kings still have only lost once in regulation under Darryl Sutter, and are 8-1-6 under their new head coach.
