Kings Lose To Penguins, 2-1, On Staal's Goal With 19 Seconds Left In OT

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Jordan Staal scored with 19 seconds left in overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings at CONSOL Energy Center. With time winding in the extra stanza, Pascal Dupuis was able to chip the puck into the Los Angeles end behind the defender. It bounced off the right boards as Staal was able to catch up to it and from the right circle snapped a shot between the right arm and body of Jonathan Quick for the win.

Brett Sterling scored the other goal while Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 stops for the Penguins, who snapped a two-game slide. Before the game, Pittsburgh head coach Dan Bylsma announced that center Evgeni Malkin had successful surgery to repair a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. The only goals in regulation came in the first period as each side lit the lamp. The Penguins got the first goal of the game with Sterling's first goal with the team. From the right side of the net, Dustin Jeffrey sent a pass to the high slot where Sterling wristed it over the glove of Quick 6:53 in.

However, Los Angeles tied the game with 2:43 left in the opening frame. Ryan Smyth skated the puck over the blueline and dished it over to the left wing for Stoll, who stickhandled past the defender and snapped a shot by Fleury. Quick made 19 saves over second and third periods while Fleury countered with 16 saves during the span.
