Dodgers Designate Bobby Abreu For Assignment

The Los Angeles Dodgers welcomed new outfielder Shane Victorino on Wednesday, but to make room for him on the roster the Dodgers designated outfielder Bobby Abreu for assignment.

Abreu, 38, will be placed on waivers, and the Dodgers will have 10 days to either trade or release him. He is now off the Dodgers' 40-man and active rosters. It is the second time Abreu has been let go this season, as he was released by the Angels to make room for Mike Trout on April 27. The Dodgers picked him up a week later.

"It was a tough one today. Bobby came at a time when we had some guys hurt and did a great job for us.," said manager Don Mattingly.

Abreu hit .251/.359/.341 in 70 games with the Dodgers, but hit just .165/.258/.215 in his last 32 games, dating back to June 19. With the addition of Victorino, there simply wasn't going to be enough playing time for Abreu.

"Shane changes the dynamic of the outfield," Mattingly said. "There's really no double switching, there's no platooning. The only place the at-bats really come are from pinch hitting."
