Dodgers Place Juan Rivera On DL, Recall Scott Van Slyke

The Los Angeles Dodgers look to capture a series win against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium. Before the game, the Dodgers will make a roster move, with Juan Rivera headed for the 15-day disabled list and Scott Van Slyke getting recalled from Triple A Albuquerque.

The Dodgers expect Van Slyke to arrive at some point before Wednesday's game.

Rivera has a significant left hamstring strain, something he suffered while sliding into third base on Tuesday night. Rivera also was held out of the starting lineup for six games earlier this season after straining his left hamstring on April 24.

Manager Don Mattingly said it looks like Rivera will be gone longer than two weeks, saying, "It sounds like it's going to be a little longer than a little shorter."

Van Slyke, 25, hit .336/.411/.623 in Triple A this season with nine home runs in 32 games. He started 23 games in the outfield in Triple A, and six games at first base. He was added to the 40-man roster last November. The right-handed batting Van Slyke figures to share time in left field with 38-year old Bobby Abreu, whom the Dodgers signed last Friday.

Van Slyke beat out fellow Albuquerque outfielder / first baseman Jerry Sands for the call up.

"The guy we're bringing is swinging the bat the best out of that position," Mattingly said. "We talked to guys that get sent out, who's swinging the bat the best will get the call. It's a competition at all points."
