Bobby Abreu Signs With Los Angeles Dodgers

Veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, as the team hopes the 38-year old will be healthy and productive enough to give them a viable left-handed bat off the bench and someone who could occasionally start in the outfield.

Abreu was released by the Los Angeles Angels on April 27 after starting his season with just five hits in 24 at-bats. Abreu hit .253/.353/.365 in 2011 for the Angels, and saw his power decline to just eight home runs, after hitting at least 15 home runs for 13 consecutive seasons.

Abreu stole 21 bases for the Angels last season, his 13th consecutive season with at least 20 steals.

The Angels are on the hook for Abreu's $9 million salary this season, less a pro-rated portion of the major league minimum salary of $480,000, which will be paid by the Dodgers.

To make room for Abreu, the Dodgers optioned infielder Justin Sellers to Triple A Albuquerque, per David Vassegh of Fox Sports Radio.
