Dodgers' Mark Ellis Was Within 6-7 Hours Of Nearly Losing Leg

Mark Ellis had to have urgent leg surgery on Saturday, one day after getting upended on a slide by Tyler Greene of the St. Louis Cardinals on a play at second base. But for Ellis, who will miss at least six weeks for the Los Angeles Dodgers, things could have been much worse.

"That's serious stuff. I didn't realize how bad that was. As [team physician De. Neal ElAttrache] said last night, if that thing goes another six or seven hours we have a chance of losing the leg," said manager Don Mattingly on Sunday. "It just amazes me to go from that play to something that could have been that serious if you don't pick it up."

Ellis was placed on the disabled list on Saturday, and will be hospitalized until Tuesday as the wound from the surgery heals. The Dodgers recalled infielder Ivan De Jesus from Triple A Albuquerque to replace Ellis on the roster, and now have no infielders remaining on their 40-man roster that aren't on the active roster or the disabled list.
