Dodgers' Dee Gordon Benched 'For A Few Days'

Stay connected for news and updates

To say Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Dee Gordon has been struggling would be quite an understatement. The leadoff man is in the midst of a 2-for-31 slump, and is hitting just .200/.239/.255 on the season. Manager Don Mattingly said on Saturday that he would sit Gordon "for a few days" and use him off the bench.

Mattingly wasn't specific on the length of time Gordon will be benched, but noted that the Dodgers face two left-handed pitchers (Patrick Corbin and Joe Saunders) in Arizona on Monday and Wednesday, so it is conceivable Gordon could be a bench player for the next five days, or at least four of those five days.

"Nothing has really changed in my thinking about Dee about what he's going to become or where he will end up," Mattingly said. "Just thinking properly is what Dee needs to do right now. He's not going through anything that there haven't been a ton of guys go through."

Other shortstop options currently on the roster for the Dodgers are Justin Sellers and Elian Herrera. Versatile reserve Jerry Hairston Jr., currently on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, is tentatively scheduled to be activated on Wednesday when the Dodgers are in Arizona.
