Dodgers Place Jerry Hairston Jr. On Disabled List With Left Hamstring Strain

The Los Angeles Dodgers have had a rash of hamstring injuries of late, and the injury has cost the team another player. Before Friday's series opener against the Colorado Rockies, the Dodgers placed utility man Jerry Hairston Jr. on the disabled list, retroactive to Monday, with a strained left hamstring, and have recalled infielder Justin Sellers from Triple A Albuquerque.

Hairston, who was hitting .315/.403/.463 in 19 games, injured his hamstring while running to first base on a single on Sunday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. He was removed from the game immediately and didn't play in any of the next three games, against the San Francisco Giants. Hairston had an MRI on Wednesday that confirmed his strained left hamstring.

"If it's going to take 10 days to heal or 14-15 days, you'd rather take that especially this time of the year, than running the risk of blowing it out and missing two months," Hairston said after Wednesday's game.

Hairston is the second Dodger this week to go on the DL with a left hamstring injury, as Juan Rivera suffered the same fate on Wednesday after feeling something in his left leg while sliding into third base Tuesday against the Giants.

Sellers gives the Dodgers a backup shortstop, something missing on the roster with Hairston out. Sellers, who can play second and third base as well, made the opening day roster for the Dodgers and was 3-for-20 before getting optioned to Triple A on May 4 when the Dodgers signed Bobby Abreu.
